G.O.A.L.S.

Hello, my name is Daniel Shpil and I am a honors molecular genetics student here at The Ohio State University. My main interests are in the healthcare and scientific research.

As an honors student, I plan on utilizing the various student-run organizations on campus that highlight global cultures to enrich my understanding of my own cultural diverse background. Clubs such as the Russian and Ukrainian club will allow me to interact more with those of similar descent to me and learn more of the intricacies of my culture. As well as learning more about my own culture, I hope to become more knowledgeable in other cultures around the globe. Through study abroad trips, as my major permits, I will be able to learn insightful information not only pertaining to my studies, but also gaining a worldly view and perspective.

By participating and working within the cutting edge research facilities found on Ohio State’s campus I hope to play a role in the inquiry process. Ohio State has numerous scientific and genetic based research projects undergoing at all times with its prestige as a research university. I plan on fully utilizing all the resources the university is able to offer, facilitating in me obtaining a research position in a laboratory. Programs such as the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program will allow me to play a part in this process and gain useful skills in original inquiry and research.

In selection of my classes, I will enroll in courses that not only strengthen my academics, but also broaden my range in knowledge. By choosing a diverse course load, spread throughout different topics in academia, I hope to enrich my curriculum to the point that I am knowledgeable in multiple areas, not only limited to science. By having this diverse base of knowledge, I can apply it to fields of study I am interested in, bringing different perspectives to the table and encouraging thoughtful academic discussion.

Through noticing gaps in my community, be it through service or recreation, I hope to lead efforts to fill them. Needed service efforts can be organized to both improve the community we live in, positively impacting disproportionately impacted areas and communities within Columbus, while also helping gain useful leadership skills to further organize future events.

By participating in school run organizations and clubs, I hope to make an impact and play a part on campus. By volunteering with organizations local to Columbus and continuing my work at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, I hope to have a positive impact on the local community and have a greater understanding of the social socials it faces daily. Working at Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a unit coordinator has allowed me to see first-hand the inner-workings of healthcare in a hospital and the city.
