Intro to Children’s Literature

I took Introduction to Children’s Literature the second semester of my sophomore year. I initially signed up for the class because I thought it would be a less challenging course that I could use to fulfill some of my gen ed graduation requirements.

I ended up enjoying the class much more than I anticipated, and I learned a lot about myself in the process. I didn’t have any interest in english classes in middle and high school, though I loved reading when I was a child. I thought I would dislike this course because we had to read many books and discuss them in both big and small groups during class time. I ended up loving the opportunity to read some of my old favorite books and talk about them with my peers.

This class really surprised me and ended up being my favorite class I’ve taken at OSU so far!

Sophomore Year Reflection

This year was challenging for me as I dealt with some personal issues in addition to the pandemic that affected everyone in many ways. I think these challenges helped me grow a lot in a short amount of time because I had to adapt to new situations as well as I could. For example, the transition to living back at home and taking online classes was very difficult and at first I really struggled to get back into the groove of things. However, I was able to plan and figure out how online school could work for me and I was able to finish the year on a pretty good note.

Vision Statement

Although my sophomore year didn’t end in a way I expected, I am still very excited for the remainder of my time at OSU. I’ve had a lot of time to think and plan during the past few months and I’ve set a few goals for myself for the rest of my time as a Buckeye. I’d like to get more involved in activities through the school and use more of the many resources provided to me. I also want to find an internship or research opportunity to work on alongside my classes once those opportunities open back up.

OSU Animal Hospital Volunteer Experience

Throughout my first semester at OSU I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Animal Hospital ICU. This experience was important to me because I was able to get my first few hours of experience being in a veterinary hospital. My role was to comfort the animals during their stay in the ICU.

About Me

My name is Lexi Shoup, I’m a first year student at OSU majoring in biology on a pre-vet track. I’m from Wilmette Illinois and I went to New Trier High School where I participated in STEM related clubs that helped me choose my major. I am a member of the Biological Sciences Scholars program where I will be involved in academic and community service projects that relate to research and science to supplement what I’m learning in the classroom.

Year in Review

My first semester at OSU so far has been a difficult transition, but it’s also been challenging and fun. Academically, the pace of the courses I’m taking ahas been pretty similar to high school. However, the lack of personalized attention from teachers and professors combined with the freedom that comes with my schedule has been hard to adjust to.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: In order to further develop my global awareness during my time at OSU I am planning on studying abroad my junior year. I want to be able to experience a culture different from the one in my hometown, and different from the culture at OSU.
  • Original Inquiry: I am going to get involved in undergraduate research with one of the researchers on campus. Gaining experience in research will both further my passion for what I’m studying in my courses, and it will provide me with experience that will be useful to me for the rest of my career.
  • Academic Enrichment: Once I complete my GE and entry level courses I will be enrolling in more rigorous and major-specific courses while continuing to pursue academic excellence.
  • Leadership Development: I participated in an early arrival program here at OSU called R-LEAD in which we spent a week learning how to be leaders in our daily lives and how to use those skills to help those around us. I will continue to participate in leadership activities and learn how to develop my leadership skills even further.
  • Service Engagement: I am involved in pre-vet club and through that club I have gotten the chance to volunteer at the animal hospital ICU once a week. My role there is to comfort the sick animals, as an ICU is a very stressful place for them to be and the vets and vet technicians don’t always have the time to focus on the simple things, like petting a dog to comfort it while it’s recovering.

Artifacts

I attended a biological sciences field trip to the Columbus Zoo and had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of the manatee exhibit. As a biology major on the pre-vet track, I’m very interested in different animals and getting to see such a variety up close is always fun for me. This trip was important for me because I was reminded of my goals when I saw the zoo employees and heard them talk about how much their vets do for the zoo.
