I chose to enroll in the UK experience because I know I will get to experience and learn a lot about a different country’s way of healthcare. I have friends who have lived in the UK and some that still do and from what I have learned from them, the UK has free healthcare for its citizens where the US has private insurance that our citizens use. Learning more about the differences not only in healthcare but in culture is going to help me in my profession. This experience will also help me to always strive to learn from other ethnicities and cultures and accommodate them in anyway that I can. This leads to not being an “ugly American”.  Not only is it ugly, but it is disrespectful to be rude or inconsiderate of another person’s culture or way of living while in their country. It is important to learn some of the norms in a country that you are traveling to before going so you can be respectful of their cultures. I am excited to learn about the UK cultures and healthcare system and bring my knowledge with me into my professional capacity.

There are a lot of skills I feel like I can bring with me on this study abroad experience. I have traveled outside of the US 4 times now, so I feel like I am a pretty good global citizen. I have learned through these experiences how to travel and to engulf myself in the culture. Even though, I have traveled to more touristy areas, I have always made an effort to also go to an area that populated more with the locals than tourists. Another skill I can bring with me is being confident in nursing skills such as screenings. I will brush up on manual blood pressures so that I can be the most accurate in doing them when we are in the UK. These things will both contribute to the success of our experience because I will be able to be a good global traveler and also do well in my nursing responsibilities.
