Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Global Awareness

Global awareness and the pursuit of understanding and appreciating all cultures is incredibly important to me as a person, student, and within my future career. I aspire to become a doctor who works for non profit organizations within areas of conflict or during disaster relief. As such this goal is a large driving force behind my academic achievements. To expand my knowledge of culture I plan on taking at least one class focused on cultures, religions, or traditions that I am unfamiliar with. I plan to join student advocacy organizations that spread awareness and advocate for groups who are often overlooked. Finally I plan to apply for a student study abroad trip through the MSF student organization to visit Ghana.

Original Inquiry

The continuous pursuit of challenge in all aspects of life is essential to me as it promotes growth and change. I plan to get involved with research to gain valuable experience in the scientific field which will challenge me professionally, socially, and academically. The involvement in research (within science) will challenge my problem solving abilities while allowing me to get hands on experience and make valuable connections with professionals in the field I am pursuing.

Academic Enrichment

I plan to challenge myself academically by taking courses that do not align with my strengths in order to force myself to adapt and challenge my ability to learn and grow. I have chosen the Neuroscience major because of my passion for science and new discoveries in knowledge. The rigor of this major is in the combination of challenging courses, however this coursework will shape me for medical school. In the future I intend to continue to take courses that both interest and challenge me in hopes of sharpening my academic skills.

Leadership Development

Leadership qualities are essential to nurture and develop while growing as a student and person. My leadership skills stem from my intention to lead by example and involvement. I am involved in the medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon which promotes medical based volunteer work, hospital fundraising, and creates a community of driven students who share a common aspiration. This group will provide me many opportunities for leadership and volunteer led work which I intend to pursue. I am also involved in the Arts and Science Student Council where I applied and was accepted to organize the Deans Meeting. This group directly allows me to sharpen my leadership and communication abilities by representing our fellow Arts and science students. Finally, I am involved in the MSF organization which is a student led group focused on international medicine and awareness which directly represents my aspirations as a future doctor. This trip has many opportunities for leadership within travel abroad trips.

Service Engagement

Involvement in my community and city which I have grown up is very important to never leave sight of. Through my acceptance into the medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon I will have plenty of local opportunities for involvement in volunteer work at places such as the Ronald McDonald house, Children’s Hospital fundraising, and many other events throughout the year. I plan to take as many of these opportunities as time permits to improve my community and make relationships outside of my campus.

About Me

Hello! My name is Blaize Shiebler and I am a freshman at the Ohio State University. My intended major is Neuroscience as I have always had an interest in the sciences especially that of the operations and communication of the body and mind. I also enjoy traveling and learning about various cultures and religions. My ultimate goal is to finish medical school where I may one day work as a doctor for Doctors Without Boarders.
