Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: In my opinion, everyone should take care to prioritize global awareness in order to create a kinder, more united world. I love to explore new places and cultures, so I certainly plan on studying abroad at some point during my undergraduate career. Clubs and volunteering will give me a great opportunity to immerse myself in other cultures and embrace individual differences. I will also surround myself with friends that come from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures in order to fully appreciate not only our similarities, but our differences as well.

Original Inquiry: I plan on getting involved in independent undergraduate research as soon as I can. In my first semester, I am already working on a semester long fungal endophyte research project for my Biology 1114H class and I would like to continue to engage in rigorous lab-based science courses across my whole career. It is a very special experience to be able to contribute to the vast bank of knowledge via original inquiry.

Academic Enrichment: At this point in time, I am heavily considering two career paths: pre-med and pre-dental. Not only do I think my major choice of biology would be a perfect fit for both of these, but biology holds my interest above all other subjects. I plan on picking up a minor, most likely chemistry, in order to further challenge myself and become a more well-rounded student. My class selection thus far has demonstrated a commitment towards rigor and will continue to do so.

Leadership Development: In order better myself as a person and a leader, I am planning on becoming much more involved in and around campus via student organizations, undergraduate research, and extracurriculars. I am currently looking into a couple clubs that are based around the biological sciences, as well as community volunteering. Past leadership experience throughout high school as the director of the writing center and soccer team captain has been crucial in my development of leadership skills. I plan to continue to challenge myself to grow, helping others along the way.

Service Engagement: In my opinion, serving others is one of the most fulfilling things anyone can do. I will engage in various volunteer projects when they are available, as well as seek service opportunity through clubs and student organizations. This will allow me to help others while developing my own understanding of the world and opening my mind. I plan on furthering my involvement with clubs like Medlife to live a life of philanthropy.

Career

One of the major purposes of my undergrad career at OSU is to take advantage of opportunities that will not only prepare me for a career in the medical field, but help me excel as well. While my first year was cut a little short, I had many influential experiences both in and out of the classroom.

Lab experience in both honors biology classes (1113H and 1114H) both stand out immediately as impact experiences. They guided me through the scientific process in a way that no class ever really had before. As the year went on, my ability to apply the scientific process and problem solved greatly increased and I credit that to my biology labs. I was also able to further my understanding and comfort with fundamental biological concepts. One of my favorite parts of the whole experience was our research project in 1113H. Over the course of the entire semester, we dedicated the majority of lab time to a single research project on fungal endophytes. By the end of the semester, we had created an in-depth research poster and were able to present our work to our peers and professors.

Volunteering with Medlife was also an important aspect of my first year. I got involved at the beginning of second semester but I wish I had started much sooner. Medlife provides a phenomenal opportunity to make a positive impact on the community. I certainly plan on increasing my involvement even more in my second year.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

Hi there, my name is Cameron Sherman. Currently, I am a second-year biology major from Milford, Ohio. I aim to apply my deep interest in medicine, as well as my passion for helping others in order to pursue a career in the medical field. During college and my career beyond school, I am driven to changing peoples’ lives for the better. A major goal of mine is to become extremely involved on campus via undergraduate research, clubs, intramural sports, and community volunteering.

I love the outdoors, playing all kinds of sports, and being around others. Two of my all-time favorite things are to make the people around me smile and laugh. Making a positive impact where ever I go, whether large or small, is tremendously important to me.

With this e-portfolio, I plan to not only showcase what I have accomplished, but provide a genuine portrayal of who I am.
