My Personal Career Philosophy & More

Hello. I am the Edon Northwest School Nurse.  I have been a Registered Nurse for 14 years and I think it is the greatest career choice there is! This is my second year working in the school. I do also maintain PRN (as needed) status at one of our local hospitals. I began my nursing career in acute world of the Medical Surgical floor. After a few years there, I moved on to Home Health Care and Hospice. I absolutly loved the autonomy of this area in nursing and there is also something special about providing nursing care within the patients comfortable environment. I also love to educate my patients and I did a lot of educating family and patients in the home.  Due to unforseen cirmstances, Home Health and Hospice became difficult to maintain in balance with my home life. The on call hours were no longer an option for me. I then transitioned back to acute care. I am what the hospital calls a “float nurse”, I have been trained in many areas including, outpatient IV clinic, Emergency Room, house supervisor, and radiology. I loved the variety of this position but one day a dear friend of mine informed me that our local school nurse was retiring and this was an oportunity that I had always hoped for. I recal at that point having a few reservations about the job being boring-I mean how many bandaids and ice packs can you hand out in a day? Fortunatly, I soon realized school nursing is a field that is far from boring. I truly had no idea what this job would entail and my OSU school nurse licensure courses have prepared me well to work in the school setting.

I have always enjoyed providing care to those in need. I feel it was certainly my calling and my philosopy has always been to provide care, respect, and guidance just like you were caring for your own family member. I have trained many employees over the years and I always expect the same from them. I treat the school kids as I would treat my own. I can’t imagine doing anything different.
