G.O.A.L.S.

To me, the G.O.A.L.S. of the honors program help to describe and emphasize the importance of being well rounded and prepared for the future, and whatever it might hold. The diversity of the G.O.A.L.S terms encourages students to consider all of the elements that can go into their education.

The first of the G.O.A.L.S. terms, Global Awareness, is about appreciating the world around us and understanding things broader than what we experience from day to day. This awareness allows us to have a greater understanding for the ways that we can help others and reach out to others within  the scope of our careers or lives. In order to work towards this goal, I would like to continue with my plan to minor in spanish, and then travel abroad to a spanish speaking country so that I can both live and appreciate another culture, and solidify my understanding of the language. Additionally, I would like to take advantage of all of the cultural activities that we have access to here at OSU. There is so much diversity in the student body, and in the surrounding Columbus area. I would like to learn as much as possible about the culture of my peers and my surroundings, in order to be able to reach out to all different types of people.

Moving on to the next of the G.O.A.L.S. terms, Original Inquiry, I would like to pursue this term by reaching out to professors across campus in order to further my interest and knowledge within my field. Additionally, I would like to take advantage of the opportunity to take classes that are higher level here. We have so many opportunities to take advantage of the huge campus that we have here at OSU, and Original Inquiry is a perfect way to do so.

Transitioning to the third term, Academic Enrichment, I think that it essential means that as an honors student it is important to push yourself and be sure that you are challenged in class. I am working towards this goal by taking challenging class, and also participating in a coding club here on campus. By surrounding myself with other motivated computer science students, I am hoping to learn even more about my major.

As far as Leadership Development goes, I joined a few clubs that I am hoping to stick with and grow in throughout my time here. I was accepted into the Honors Community Council, and hope to find a leadership role there within the honors program. Within my coding club, coding for a cause, we are developing programs to reach out to school within our community. In these ways I hope to develop my leadership skills and grow within both the OSU campus, and Columbus. Furthermore, I hope to carry these skills with my in my future to my career and lie after OSU.

Finally, the “S” term, Service Engagement means reaching out to the community and providing people in the community with service and help. I hope to become more involved in serving the Columbus community, but also serving other communities by combining this term with others in the G.O.A.L.S. acronym.

Overall, the G.O.A.L.S. of the honors program mean expanding your comfort zone and fulfilling your full potential as a student here at Ohio State. Further, it encourages students to take these concepts and apply them in their future lives in order to be more successful and current within their post college lives.
