Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Honors students will examine what it means to be global citizens and will cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. Students will examine the world’s complex, interdependent systems, as well as their own cultural backgrounds.

How I hope to do this:

  • By participating in different cultural and diversity events around me in Columbus, becoming aware of the different people and their thoughts, values, and cultures.
  • By traveling abroad to see the different cultures of the world and their ways of life.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

How I hope to do this:

  • By performing research in areas of interest: cellular and molecular neuroscience, immunology, and cellular biology.

Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

How I hope to do this:

  • By taking honors courses when applicable and taking courses that are truly pushing me to become a better student.
  • By extending the knowledge I gain from lectures beyond the class, applying it to the world around me.
  • By participating in academic clubs that suit my interest.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

How I hope to do this:

  • By becoming an active member in the clubs that I participate in.
  • By working not because I have to but because I want to.
  • By standing up for issues no one else will.

Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

How I hope to do this:

  • By serving not only the people in my local community but outside of my hometown. Perhaps by taking medical mission trips to developing nations with underserved populations.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. OSU/Red Cross Blood Drive

September 22, 2017

This was my first blood drive that I’ve ever done, and it was quite an experience. The main purpose of this service was to increase awareness about the blood drives occurring on campus. This was done by publicizing the event to people walking through the campus. Another aspect of this service was to facilitate the actual drive itself; this was done by helping people check in and passing out snacks. Specifically, I helped check people in and recruit people to donate blood at the blood drive.

I believe that this was a great experience. It was interesting to see how these drives work and how much time and effort actually goes into running one of these drives. It was really difficult to get people to come donate their blood, but we managed to exceed our goal, which is fantastic. If given the opportunity, I would definitely volunteer at a blood drive again.

Here are some of the metrics from the drive:

Goal: 23 units

Actual Collected: 25 units

Donors Registered: 33

Deferrals: 7

Patients that these donations could help save: 75 lives

About Me

Hello! My name is Aayush Sharma, and I am currently an first-year undergraduate student pursuing a B.S. degree in Neuroscience. I am also in the Honors program here at my collegiate institution. After my undergraduate years, I hope to go to medical school where I can fulfill my life-long dream of becoming a physician.

My passion lies in the sciences. For so long, I have been intrigued by different natural phenomena, marveling at how intricate our universe is. I particularly have a deep fascination with the human body and its elegant complexity. Before studying medicine, I hope to gain a greater understanding of the biology, chemistry, and physics behind life and how they all connect together to create the beauty that is life.

Alongside studying the sciences, I wish want to give back to the community, especially in areas that are underserved. I believe that it is our duty to help progress and advance mankind, even if it something as simple as volunteering at a library. Whatever it takes, we ought to make this world better for everyone.
