Global Awareness: I hope to increase my knowledge about other cultures by studying abroad. Through this experience, I believe that I could gain knowledge not only from my classes but from a total immersion in a new culture.

Original Inquiry: I hope to take part in undergraduate research at some point in my time at Ohio State in order to better understand the research process and to gain deeper knowledge of a topic that interests me.

Academic Enrichment: I hope to continue working diligently in my courses and gain as much from every academic experience as I possibly can.

Leadership Development: I hope to pursue leadership opportunities and further develop my leadership skills in order to prepare for my future career.

Service Engagement: I hope to find new ways to engage in service at the community level in order to affect change in our area and gain a better understanding of the community itself.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

I interviewed Grace Beedles, a sophomore at Ohio State on her experiences at the university. Grace is double majoring in Political Science and Strategic Communications and will receive her certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. When I asked her about how she came to chose her majors she told me that she had always been interested in politics and possibly attending law school which led her to major in political science. She later added the major in Strategic communications in case she decided not to attend law school, so that she would be better prepared to get a job immediately after finishing her undergraduate education.

We also talked about Grace’s experiences in the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program freshman year, and her responsibilities on the executive board this year. She told me that she greatly enjoyed her time in PSL freshman year and was happy to be on the same floor with so many people that shared her interests. Grace also talked about her trip to D.C. with the scholars program and how she was excited to explore places in the city that one might not ordinarily get to see. This year, Grace is a member of the executive board for PSL. In this position, she works with other members of the board to plan events like the first year cohort meeting.

About Me

My name is Jennie Sharkey and I am currently a first year student majoring in Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am also a member of the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program. In my next few years at Ohio State, I hope to make connections and learn new information that will prepare me for a career in government work.

I am not currently involved in many clubs at Ohio State, but at my high school I was involved in leadership for Model United Nations as well as a service organization. Once clubs begin meeting in person again, I look forward to getting further involved on campus. In my own community, I make an effort to volunteer often, especially with organizations that whose objectives align with my own goals of furthering opportunities for women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
