Vinegar Eels

Into a 1 L container (polypropylene deli cups work very well), place the following:

  • 1/2 apple, washed / rinsed
  • ~500 mL RO water
  • ~200 mL apple cider vinegar
  • pipet or decant ~100 mL of fluid from established culture (be sure to transfer some of the debris as well)

Loosely cover the container with a lid. Cultures should produce well for about 3-4 months and I usually keep about 4-6 on hand. The cultures should probably be replaced/restarted when the light amber color turns to red ochre and / or the apple breaks down completely. In that case, dispose of the remaining fluid / particles and soak the container with a 10% bleach solution overnight and rinse.

If you wish to feed vinegar eels to fish fry, the nematodes must be purged in dechlorinated tap water / RO water.
