Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

G: Global Awareness

In order to fulfill this goal to appreciate diversity around the world, I would love to join a club that is focused on another culture. For example, I’ve been taking French for five years and learning about the French culture has encouraged me to discover even more about it on my own and potentially study abroad there (or anywhere for that matter). Physically immersing myself in a completely different culture will help me better understand it and hopefully expand my openness. Additionally, I’m taking Anthropology 2202H, which is an introduction to cultural anthropology. Learning about topics such as how different cultures adapt and how languages evolved is genuinely interesting to me, and I’m excited to take even more anthropology courses in the future.

O: Original Inquiry

One of my ultimate goals is to work in a lab, hopefully analyzing DNA on the forensics route, but in order to do so I need prior experience. To engage in this I would like to eventually conduct research and/or work in a lab with one of my professors. It’s too early for me to know anyone and I still need more background knowledge I believe, but within the next year or two I hope to do this so I can further challenge myself while doing something that fascinates me. I’m also planning on taking additional honors courses, not just because of the requirements, but because I want to be the best I can be academically and taking advanced courses is just one way to do it.

A: Academic Enrichment

As stated before, I would love to work in a lab in the forensics field, so it’s only appropriate to choose Biology as my major with either a specialization in Forensic Biology or a minor in criminology or forensic science. Most of my courses will be based around that, but GE wise I would like to take courses like theatre and criticism of television class because arts and media are another one of my interests, and I have been involved with theatre for many years and I have become passionate about it over the years. Social issues are a big part of my life and everyone else’s, and I want to become more educated, so I feel like taking GEs like WGSS and Sociology will give me an opportunity to comprehend everything that’s happening in the world.

L: Leadership Development

As of right now, I’m not involved in any extracurriculars, but I’m planning on becoming a member of Buckeyethon this year. In high school, we had an event similar to this called Dublinthon which also raised money for children with cancer. Most of my friends were in it, and that’s what initially made me want to do it, but it’s for a good cause and it makes me feel great knowing that we help contribute to the funds and spread awareness to others. Overall I haven’t had very many leadership experiences, but I’m hoping to find one that will potentially help me in my career.

S: Service Engagement

I would like to join one of the student organizations that specializes in community service. Recently I expressed interest in Oval Dogs and Act!on Social Change where I could help make a difference in people’s lives. In high school I volunteered every now and then at Animal Shelters and hopefully I can continue to work with animals here at OSU. Buckeyethon could also be counted in this category for me, as I have become more and more passionate about raising money for cancer research and spreading awareness since my brother was diagnosed. Because of this personal experience, I’ve had a new perspective on things and I would really like to better understand these issues through this service.
