G.O.A.L.S. : Academic Enrichment

As a Human Rights minor, quite a few of my courses are being rewritten and challenged on a daily basis. Here’s a few- and how they’ve been in the news.

INTSTDS 5801: Children & War Currently, the war in Syria has displaced many- including children, who are assumed to be more “resilient”- as in, capable of picking themselves up after extreme trauma.

INTSTDS 5050: Two Koreas North Korea has an interesting place within American culture- often the subject of jokes (and controversial comedies), its unique and rare context makes it a dazzling prospect for ongoing social research.

WGSST 5450: Global Human Trafficking I come from a town where not once, but twice, major trafficking rings were busted. While trafficking is seen unquestionably as a horror, the question has to be asked- what are we doing about it?

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S. : Global Awareness

Out of both a personal and professional passion, I have planned to participate in the following study abroad programs!

Freshman Maymester – “Cuba: Race, Revolution, and Culture”

Race has been a continuously significant social factor in American culture and politics. However, we’re hardly special in this regard. Through this program, I hope to understand the often unheard perspectives of Cubans of color.

Junior Maymester – “Canadian Parliamentary Internship”

While I’d like to work in American local government, I do believe there’s much to be learned from Canada’s national government. While they each operate with different whims and ways, each shares a core value; to make life, for every citizen, just and dignified.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts – API Cohort

This is a photo of this year's API (Asian & Pacific Islander) Cohort, an organization which seeks to mentor and make leaders of Asian students. I joined not only to seek community, but to learn about the wide variety of Asian experiences on campus. I hope to work in local government one day, a field in which Asian Americans have made their mark- quietly- for many years. With the methods and ways I've learned through API Cohort, I hope to be a bold, vocal leader, not just for my community, in the future.

About Me

shamshad1-1

Like many children, I grew up obsessed with space. I admired the likes of Yuri Gagarin and John Glenn, all the while dreaming of where humanity was headed next. It’s fitting, after all, that now, as a first year, I’ve found myself studying at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs- a perfect mesh of my childhood dreams and civic aspirations.

While Star Trek has often taken up much of my time, observing- and experiencing- the issues of today has compelled me to become involved with the world’s affairs. I began with international obstacles, but have recently discovered that local government seems to be my niche. The opportunity to promote and enact change within a microcosm would allow me not only to see impactful differences, but lead other governments in making their own moves.

Ambitious political agendas aside, I consider myself to be someone interested in just about everything. Sports (hockey and baseball), science fiction, and linguistics are among my favorite pastimes!
