Year in Review

Semester in Review:

My first semester here at The Ohio State University was a unique and extraordinary experience. I joined an Indian dance team called Genesis, I met so many new people, and realized how special college is. This semester was a stepping stone for me to become new and improved in my own right and I will not forget it. I enjoyed the hard work I put into my classes, I appreciated them and have been doing fairly well. Chemistry has been my hardest subject, but it has become easier and easier to understand and review for the class. Statistics and French 2 have been flying by and I have enjoyed going into these smaller seminar settings because I have met great friends. And, I have also tried my best to become involved on campus as much as possible, but commuting from home has made it difficult. But, I have found myself a team and a family in Genesis. Through the dance team, I have met so many people and it has been a great experience so far. Just from one semester, I can see how much I have changed and grown as a person and will keep on growing for the years to come.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Learning and understanding different viewpoints from around the world and from my own peers. I plan on studying abroad to fulfill this goal. I have always wanted to study abroad and travel and different cultures always interested me. Therefore, studying abroad in Europe, South America, or Australia would be interesting to learn about their cultures and how they compare with North America’s.

Original Inquiry: Understanding how research and branching out will affect future endeavors. I plan on researching at the Veterinarian Medical Center, and also joining the Pre-Vet club. Through doing these two things, I will be able to branch out and meet other veterinarians and other people who have the same interest as I do.

Academic Enrichment: Preforming and obtaining highest possible grades and marks in rigorous classes. Already, I believe I have been performing at my best in all of my classes, but I plan on becoming more immersed into these classes and seeing how I can apply what is learned in everyday life.

Leadership Development: Obtaining and perfecting leadership skills through extracurriculars across campus. To fulfill this goal I plan on joining different clubs and applying for a board spot in that club, possibly even president of the club.

Service Engagement: Preform community service and see how doing a single thing could affect someone’s life. I have been volunteering in other areas such as Riverside Hospital, but I plan on doing a trip to a country in need and helping build houses, providing food and water, and also seeing their side of things and understanding what it means to not have the same opportunities.

Career

It has taken me awhile to determine what my career goals will be and they are always changing. However, I think I have come up with a base of what I exactly am determined to do. First, I have always wanted to become a veterinarian and I am sticking to this plan no matter what. I intend to go to one of the top schools in the U.S. for veterinarian school such as University of California Berkeley. I intend to also have my one practice after a couple of years in the field and am certainly determined to carry out this goal.

These cross country spikes represent six years of my life. I started running cross country in seventh grade because my older brother used to run. I thoughAll the t it would be a good idea to keep the legacy going and become a runner just like my older brother was. Now, before the season started, during the summer, my family, especially my brother, would tell me to train. Go out for two mile runs and do not stop. But, as a seventh grader who was all high and mighty with his ability to run, I did not listen and barely trained. This and my terrible eating habits made my first year of cross country absolutely horrible. I was not fast whatsoever. My final time during my first year was an eighteen minute two mile, while other kids my age were running fourteen to thirteen minute two miles. It was absolutely crazy to me. For the next couple of years, I still did not take the training advice my family would give me and it would show during my races. I would barely improve and I would then become angry and upset because of my own wrong doings. I realized that to be better at something, I have to put work into it to get the results I want. I began to train hard over the summer with the team. We did workouts, long runs, and had some fun runs. Eventually, I saw improvements in my times and got closer and closer to getting a varsity letter (though I did not officially obtain the time).

I decided to choose this as my artifact because it was something that I deeply connected with. Cross country, or running, in general, has encompassed over half my life. It has taught me to never give up, push through the pain, and practice makes perfect. But one of the biggest lessons it has taught me is that if I put a certain amount of effort into something, the results with reflect that amount of effort. This has followed in all aspects of my life such as keeping relationships, working at my job, and also studying for exams. I have learned to live by this lesson because I will only get the results I desire by putting in the effort to acquire those results.

I attended a scholars session that was about the growing anatomy program here at OSU. I came in thinking that I will just listen and get my scholars event and then leave, but as the speakers began talking about the program and what they do, I became more attentive. I did not realize that the anatomy program here at OSU was so big and growing at a huge rate. Anatomy has always interested me and listening to how they are planning on applying for a minor and developing new classes and dissection sessions made me realize that I am really interested in Anatomy and I might look into this program here at OSU.
