1.Who are the subjects in Elle’s photos? How do they choose their subjects?

Elle’s subjects in her photographs are of people… Elle would work with friends and some of the most memorable sessions Perez experienced was when staging and photographing an entertainment wrestling match.

2.What does Elle point out as important in a portrait? How does this deviate from typical ideas around what a portrait is?

Perez’s work is “raw, visceral, and emotionally authentic” this is why it is often mistaken for documentary work but in reality the work is staged.  Pérez calls the photograph “a perfect container because it is not actually, ever, definitive.” thats why it deviates from typical ideas of what a portrait is.

3.How does Elle connect their identity as a queer artist with the way they make work?

One of the most prominent ways Elle connects their identity is with the array of people they work with and also the projects they take on. Elle took on a project regarding a shirt designed for men with excess breast tissue which was then taken and adopted by the trans community. Perez wanted to capture the wear, tear, and sweat of the piece so they had one that was worn for 5 years to really amplify the importance of the piece to queer identity and culture.

1.How does Cuevas expand the definition of drawing in her work?

She expands her drawings by using the world and media as her canvas. A great example is her limestone protect along the Rio bravo.

2.In what ways does she shift typical ideas around political activism and social change?

She shifts ideas through her work. She believes that books and projects being great to promote political activism but only true action will bring change

3.How does her work open up ideas for you about your own civic engagement? Do you find yourself agreeing with her or wanting to challenge her ideas?

She talks a great deal about confronting our own reality and what we want in our lives, she believes speaking out and letting your voice be heard is the biggest step you can take in order to ensure a brighter future for you and others and I truly agree with her statements.

Though Shepard Fairey’s work was not on the list I picked him because he is greatly known for his political work. His form of art captures the essence of several main topics society is always focused. The biggest topic Fairey uses in his artwork is the idea of not obeying, not obeying to societies rules. How we act, what we buy, and what we consume is heavily influenced by society’s message of obeying to what is fed to you. Using the big bold word “OBEY”, captures the attention of consumers. The message makes viewers think twice. The meaning behind the word “Obey” is meant to be ironic, Fairey wants consumers to not obey and he feels it’s the viewers job to change their perspective. Fairey’s job is to nudge viewers in “right direction”

1.How have your ideas changed around what drawing is/can be? If so, explain.

Drawing to me always meant an open plane of creation. Creating what lies in your headspace and taking it from a virtual idea and making it physical. Im glad drawing is more than realism and shadows. Im happy to see that all forms of art are included in drawing.

2.What has been the most challenging part of the class?

The hardest part is when Im drawing and trusting my hands and eyes and not tryna perfect every little mistake.

3.What aspect/assignment/part of the class has been the most relevant to you/your life?

The most relevant assignment were had thus far was probably our 2nd IN-person assignment I felt that visualizing and capturing our surroundings and turning them into snapshot/sketches was a very good practice for being indecisive and uncomfortable with not reaching peak perfection.

4.Where do you want to most improve in your drawings going forward (can be in terms of technique, concentration, understanding of art, anything)?

The thing I want to improve most is trusting myself when drawing so when we’re doing free hand work and not checking our paper I want to trust the process even if it turns out bad. Practice (eventually) makes perfect
