Space and Time Walk

Project Statement

My goal was to make a very detailed map with a realistic layout and a tiny footprint path. I like extra detail so I didn’t mind putting in the time and effort. I knew from the start that I would start drawing my map on the iPad because I really enjoy working in Sketchbook and I wanted my map to have a lot of detail so the scale was small within a large area. I also chose to do it digitally to avoid any mistakes that I would make on paper, no eraser marks or faint pencil lines can be seen. I wanted it to be very precise and clean, as I learned from the last project and the smudging. It’s also easier to test out what works and what doesn’t on Sketchbook because you can just move things around until you like it than draw it on the paper, where it becomes permanent. I wanted my map to have some pop so that’s why I really wanted multiple colors and the theme just pulled everything together into my perfect planned outcome.

Reflection

I learned from my last project that I need to be on top of my work at all times, I didn’t want to have to do my entire project the day it was due. I had to learn about scaling and dimensions in order for my final to be possible. It wasn’t as difficult as I though but it was still a challenge because I didn’t have a scale map or anything to guide me in the sizing difference. Another challenge was the unexpected warping between pages. It was an easy fix but I was just unprepared. I discovered in myself that I love detail. I realize now why I struggled with the abstract project, because my brain always focuses on the details first and abstractions don’t really have any defining details. I discovered a loophole in the project perimeter’s and used that to my full advantage when creating value from one color. I’m proud of this work and I think I could’ve added even more detail if I had the time.
