Shape Grammar

Project Statement

My vision for the final piece was to have something simple but not boring, which is why I scraped my first idea, as it was too big and complicated with too many edges to cut out. It looked confusing and my final idea looks simpler. I liked toying with the idea of raindrops, and I liked using a circle and triangle together in the exercises. I also want to incorporate my square, too so they would all be together. I decided to make a cutout of my raindrop outline so it would fit into the square without actually touching or connecting to it. I wanted to add something else too, to give some uniform harmony. I chose to add the little triangle to give it some variation and white space. The outcome was just what I was looking for, something modern-like showing multiple principles.

Reflection

In the future, I want to spend more time on my projects and really work to make them perfect. I learned that good work pays off in the final. Unfortunately, I didn’t spend as much time as I could’ve on parts of this project so it wasn’t at its full potential. For the shape, line, plane exercises, I knew they didn’t turn out anything like my other work that I’ve done in this class and I’m disappointed in myself how little effort I put in. My biggest challenge was against myself. I learned in my second attempt that it was easier to start with a design principle and brainstorm from there, which gave much better results. I was proud of the final project, as I had more time to work and think about this one and it followed the guidelines of the exercise perfectly. My biggest achievement to come out of this project is obtaining a better ability to show design principles through shapes and drawings. I knew somewhat about how to convey them, but now, after this project, I understand it completely. However, for this project I am a bit disappointed because I could’ve done better but I still enjoyed the process and my final outcome.
