Masked Up

Project Statement

My goal for this project was to create two masks that represented contrasting lifestyles in a post-apocalyptic world. I based my core design off of the popular Netflix Show: Squid Games. Our masks are not identical to the masks from the show, we added our own additions and design elements.  Each of the masks was designed with a lifestyle in mind and I made my mask revolving around a very wealthy lifestyle, shown through the gold spray paint and gemstones and gold leaf. The protruding shapes of my lion give the mask a unique silhouette, drawing attention and interest.  Symmetry also plays a heavy role in signifying perfection.

Reflection

I learned that success is bound to come through failure. I attempted to make the sleek, smooth geometric form by continuously folding different shapes, creasing and testing each angle. I struggled with imagining the mask as a 2D cutout, which is why I had so many failed attempts. But, through all that practice, I gradually learned what not to do and I soon took inspiration from other things, which helped me finally achieve my form. The form was strengthens even further when I tested other materials. In the future, I’ll remember to keep an open mind, as inspiration can come from anywhere, especially past works.
