Gifting Design

Project Statement

My goal for this project was to create a functioning puzzle box where interaction was needed to complete the experience. I built this project out of wood materials, all hand cut. The idea for this project came from a 3D printed butterfly puzzle box and I modeled my basic designs off of that, with many alterations and compromises. I kept originality in the box however, I made it my own with all the additions and subtractions of material. My mentor said she likes romantic comedies and I spawned a few ideas off of that. The interior is decorated with her in mind and I filled it with presents for her. This box was designed to show the element of surprise, or mystery.

Reflection

This project gave me experience in wood shop and gave me the opportunity to learn many new things from myself and my Dad. During the construction process, I learned many things from my dad. He taught me about bevels, the thing that allows my pieces to slide sideways.  Since I had to rely on myself for most of the process, I had to make do with the tools and knowledge I had at hand to handle whatever situation I was in. I made multiple mistakes and had to start over at some points. But, the act of starting over gave me the opportunity too look at my problem from a new perspective and try new ways to solve it. When I was met with the roadblock of securing my lock, I thought about how I secured other parts of the box and did the same to the lock. The challenges made it worth while and I have a lot of pride in the history of this work.
