AJPH: Transgender Public Health

Special Section on Transgender Public Health

The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) is pleased to announce a call for papers for a special section focused on the state of transgender public health today, scheduled for publication in March 2025.

Over the past several years, the U.S. has seen a significant increase in anti-transgender legislation, resulting in profound and harmful effects on transgender individuals and communities. These laws have targeted essential aspects of life, including access to medical care, participation in sports, and representation in educational content. Despite these challenges, there has been remarkable resistance and advocacy from transgender individuals and their allies, striving to protect and promote transgender rights and well-being.

We invite the submission of manuscripts that explore a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Pressing issues in transgender-affirmative medical ethics, bioethics, and public health ethics
  • Trans-supportive policies at the local and state levels and their impact on communities
  • Best practices in transgender youth and adult care
  • Inclusive sexual health education curricula in K-12 settings
  • Transgender-inclusive medical education and training
  • Health promotion strategies focusing on transgender empowerment and organizing
  • Innovations in transgender inclusion in data collection and clinical research
  • Research on resilience, adaptive coping, and health hardiness in transgender populations
  • Programs and initiatives aimed at promoting transgender well-being and thriving

Potential authors should review the AJPH Instructions for Authors to ensure compliance with submission guidelines. Manuscripts must include a cover letter specifying that the submission is for the “Transgender Public Health” special section.

Research paper submissions are due by October 15, 2024. Non-research contributions, such as editorials and qualitative notes, will be accepted until December 15, 2024. If you are unable to meet the research paper deadline, please contact Stewart Landers (Stewart_Landers@jsi.com) or B. Ethan Coston (bmcoston@vcu.edu) to request an extension.

Submissions should be made via AJPH’s submission portal.

Special Section on LGBTQ+ Well-Being,
Flourishing, Pride, & Joy

The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) invites manuscript submissions on LGBTQ+ well-being, flourishing, pride, and joy, to be published in June 2025.

Amid rising homophobia, transphobia, and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, it’s critical for public health professionals to reaffirm their commitment to LGBTQ+ psychosocial, emotional, and physical well-being. This special section focuses on activities, research, programs, and community-led efforts that celebrate LGBTQ+ resilience, thriving, joy, and pleasure as integral to health.

Potential topics include:

  • The role of joy and pleasure in health, particularly in synergy with movements like Black Boy Joy and #DisabledPeopleAreHot;
  • Resistance in LGBTQ+ communities building power and confronting dominant societal norms;
  • Support for sex workers, sexual surrogates, and intimacy practitioners;
  • Sexual agency, citizenship, and promotive sexual rights;
  • Healthy relationships, hook-up culture, queer/trans pleasure, and T4T love stories;
  • Affirmative asexual identity development and community-making;
  • Developmental processes and milestones, including positive self-discovery, relationships, and non-monogamy;
  • Queer and trans family-of-choice;
  • Strengths-based health promotion, interventions, and sexual education models.
