Research

My Research:

In the United States, the number of developmental disabilities diagnoses (specifically autism) is rising each year. My dissertation investigated quality of life for families of children with autism by examining associations between the child’s severity of symptoms and a family’s ability to participate in both home-based and community-based leisure. Using clinically accepted measures and quantitative analyses, these associations were identified and compared to those within a sample of families with typically developing children. Disability occurs in many contexts for children such as the home, the school, and the community, and I argued that by studying the relationships between these contexts, the quality of life for children with autism and their families could be both measured and predicted, and as a result, improved.

The trajectory of my work began with a focus on parenting, specifically the transition to parenthood. After coauthoring one publication in the Infant and Mental Health Journal, I was the first-author on “Co-parenting,” an entry in The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education. This piece focused on the important role co-parenting plays in lives of young children, and also discussed “co-caring” in a school setting, an extension of the co-parenting relationships that includes the child’s teacher. In addition, I coauthored an article recently published in Research in Human Development which focused on the importance of psychological safety within the family to support the adjustment of new parents.
