Artifacts- Econ in Everyday Life

For my Econ 2001.01 class, I had to find an example of an economic concept in real life as an assignment.  It took me time for me to think of an idea until I found a vending machine that sold cold refreshments that said that it was closed for the winter.  Immediately I figured out that the demand for the items would be low during the winter time because no one would want a cold can of soda when it is freezing outside.  This assignment helped me realize that some of the simple concepts that we learn during class is also happening every where in the real world.

G.O.A.L.S-Academic Enrichment

As an Actuarial Science major, I have to take and pass 5 preliminary exams.  In order to take an exam, I have to take the course that corresponds with that exam.  In order to pursue academic excellence, I plan on taking these corresponding courses as soon as I can in order to give myself time to retake the exams if I have to.  I also plan on taking a balanced number of GEs that are related to my major, such as CSE, and some GEs that can be challenging but also make me a more well rounded student.  I am thinking about doing two internships so I want to be able to show that I am committed to excellence inside the classroom.

About Me

My name is Eugene Seok and I am a first year majoring in Actuarial Science at the Ohio State University hoping to eventually minor in business.  I graduated from Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio.  Through the courses that I took during high school, I developed a passion for math and that fueled my interest in pursuing a math related major in college.  During my time here at Ohio State, I hope to not only learn about the nuances related to my major, but to find other courses and activities that could spark an interest.  Joining the Advocates for Community and Education Scholars program is one example of a way that I am trying to explore out of my major.  This scholars group sounded interesting to me because I knew help out and volunteer at numerous places around the community.  Currently I am in the Actuarial club in Ohio State but I am also thinking of joining the radical pi club and the ping-pong club.  Outside of school, I like to hang out with my friends, play ping-pong, or spend time outdoors hiking or camping.

G.O.A.L.S.-Service Engagement

One way that I plan on getting engaged in service is through my scholars group.  Volunteering is important to me because it helps bring the community together and you also get the chance to help out an organization that you care about.  My scholars group, ACES, is all about volunteering at places on and off our campus to strengthen our community.  Through my scholars group, I plan on volunteering 20 hours a semester in order to stay active in the OSU community.

Artifacts- ACES Pillars Film Project

In my ACES scholars seminar class, I had to work in a group project, and our task was to choose and watch a documentary and then reflect on it and relate it back to the ACES pillars, which are Positive Social Change, Advocacy, Community, and Service.  My group ended up choosing the film, “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine”.  This documentary is a story about a man named Matt Shepard who murdered because he was gay.  Matt’s murder help people realize the hate crimes toward the LGBT community, so the people came together and there positive social change was made.  The film also shows Matt’s childhood life and the events leading up to the murder.

One of the main lessons that I learned from the film is that positive change can happen even from horrific events.  I thought that the film did a nice job of showing clips of people rallying and standing up against the issues, and the love and the support the Shepard family received after the murder.  Even after the film was released, there were new laws that were passed to prevent hate crimes against the LGBT community.

One of the biggest takeaways that I received from the film was that even though it seems like Matt Shepard was a hero, the film tries to also show that he was just an ordinary guy and that this tragedy can happen to anyone.  It is a reminder to cherish all of the people in your life that are important to you.
