G.O.A.L.S.

What does G.O.A.L.S. mean to me? As a first-year student I am still very unsure where I want to take my academic experience over the next four years. I might not follow my plans accordingly but this will give me a stepping stone into the chapters of my life throughout college.

Global Awareness: What I imagine where I hear these words, I immediately think of helping others. As an unorganized first-year student, I often find myself only ever thinking about myself. How am I going to study? How am I going to get everything done? I never take the time to realize how many people around the world that do not even have same resources or opportunities that I have. I’d like to find myself in the near future studying abroad  in Rwanda. I would be attending a four week summer program to find how the community of Rwanda is building itself up again after such a horrific genocide.

Original Inquiry: I would like to see myself working along side or even taking many classes with a professor who has credible work done in Criminology/Sociology. I want to be able to do research study in my field to understand why people think the way they do and help to extend this knowledge in broad spectrum. I feel that if more people are understanding in why they think the  way do, it would help prevent crimes or even just bring new research too light.

Academic Enrichment: I chose Criminology and Psychology because these are majors that will I believe will constantly have something new to teach. I want to work in a field that deals with all types of people. I want to know why people commit the crimes that they commit and feel the way they do leading up to the crime and even during because I believe if we start looking for signs in people, we can find a way to prevent crimes and get people the help they need. I love to learn about people and I want to be someone who understands a person before they can even understand themself.

Leadership Development: I have not taken the chance to have leadership opportunities on campus but I know what it means to be a leader. Someone who can diligently handle many tasks at once. A leader does not please everyone but they need to do what they feel is best by majority and help to meet the needs of others who may not be apart of the majority. I can see myself in the future, leading an operation team to a successful outcome for our task at hand.

Service Engagement: I want to work along side law enforcement or in social work to understand the needs of a family in this aspect. Incarcerations effect more than just the person itself. It can take away the only provider for that family and I would like to open the eyes of the others to help find a way to help these families or children who have nothing before they start to go down the wrong path and make bad decisions like the people they see around them.
