Type of Data

EHR-based data

Years Available

  • OSU PCORnet is the entire OSU EHR data.
  • All EPIC data from 2011 November onwards. Prior to 2011 we have the legacy data.
  • Data gets refreshed every 3 months. Refresh schedule is Jan, April, July, Oct.

Short Description

PCORI funded National distributed Research Network with ~50 academic medical centers and health systems ((grouped into 8 Clinical Research Networks (CRNs))) spread all over US. Data available at the National and Network level with DUA and IRB as needed. At OSU we pull the discrete data from our EHR along with claims data from the OSU HealthPlan. We are in the process of adding Tumor Registry into the CDM.

Strengths

  • Data points from the Network’s diverse clinical information systems (EHRs) is standardized into a common format called the Common Data Model (CDM) and stays within each site. As a result, users of PCORnet can ask the same question simultaneously to hundreds of disparate systems and receive a clear, reliable answer.
  • OSU is a member of the PaTH CRN along with Pitt, Hopkins, Temple, Geisinger, PennState, UMichigan, Boston Medical Center and Rush.
  • Working with PCORnet or PaTH as a whole, researcher learn from larger and more diverse populations than from a single health care system.
  • Network works directly with patients, care providers, and the larger health care community to better understand what’s truly relevant to patients and improve care delivery

Limitations

  • Limited Datasets (LDS). Demographic, Encounters, Labs, Medications, Procedures, Diagnosis and other most often requested data elements available.
  • Only discrete data is populated (no clinical notes).
  • Not all datapoints gets extracted into the CDM from EHR.  ***However, linkage to EHR is available with an IRB.
