Short Description

American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) collects data on more than 150 variables including preoperative risk factors, intraoperative variables and 30-day postoperative mortality and morbidity for patients undergoing major surgical procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Strengths

  • Includes short term (30 day) surgical outcomes
  • Large number of participating reporting sites

Limitations

  • Complications or death after 30-day post-surgery are not included
  • While many risk factors are tracked, preventative measures are not included which can lead to an underestimation of certain conditions that are routinely taken before surgery
