DIARY OF SYSTEMIC INJUSTICES: Breonna Taylor
The Diary that was most interesting to me was the one I wrote about Breonna Taylor. In light of everything that has been going on this past year, it is crucial to look at issues like these on a small and large scale. It is clear that this tragedy affected the lives of her family but also affected the lives of people all over the US. On top of dealing with all of the restrictions and changes that have been out of our control, the shooting of Breonna Taylor really put many individuals on the edge. This woman was a 26 year old hospital worker. She was doing her part to help others and it is so sad that she wasn’t able to help herself. Police officers raided her home for a suspected drug charge that was placed on her ex boyfriend but when they stormed into her home, she was the one that was shot down multiple times. She heard the commotion going on in her home and when she went to go see what the problem was she ended up dying on her hallway floor. The reason why I was touching on this subject, was because the men that were responsible for this incident were prosecuted. However, the officers were not charged with killing Breonna in her own home but with “wanton endangerment” for firing shots into a neighbors apartment. This outcome offended many people. The officers were white and they believed they did what was right when clearly a mistake was made. Now, they do not have to take legal responsibility for what they did. This has been an ongoing issue in our society for years. This has happened again most recently with Geogre Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and now Breonna Taylor. People believe that the police are not held responsible in certain cases because of who was involved, these ongoing protests have shown that this behavior is not acceptable and everyone are really fed up it. This case is a clear example of how our justice system favors some people over others. Society has been trying really hard to hold police more accountable for instances like these. However, It is not uncommon for someone to believe that if a police officer does something, even if it harms an innocent person, it’s for the greater good. Tragic accidents like Breonna’s need to be paid more attention to. Breonna’s family has been doing everything they can to give everyone the facts so at least people can fight for her and gain justice in other ways. It is important to note, during this course we have talked about a lot of different people who are considered the “other”. In this case, Breonna did not have a voice and her life was taken from her based on assumptions that were placed on her ex- boyfriend. She was not allowed the voice to say that she was not involved and now people can make assumptions about who she was and what she did. However, Breonna’s family has been doing everything they can to give everyone the facts so at least people can fight for her and gain justice in other ways.
