Text Review- The Gua Sha Treatment

By Zhenyang Shao

The movie that I select is The Gua Sha Treatment. The movie talked about a story that the Protagonist Datong and his Chinese wife moved to the United States and lived there for a long time. When they thought they would almost finish their American dreams, a bad thing happens. One day, his son Dennis got a cold, and Dennis’ grandfather use Gua Sha which is a Chinese traditional medicine to cure his illness. Gua Sha would leave some light petechiae on Dennis’ back which would make people misunderstand as a painful looking mark. Because of culture difference and conflict, his American neighbor accused Datong of bullying child. In the court, the judge also prosecuted that Datong included the Chinese legendary character Sun Wukong in his design of a violent video game. However, he did not know the cultural value of Sun Wukong. Finally, Datong was penalized and cannot meet his son anymore.

In this movie, it shows the interculture relationship and conflict between China and America. The identity of Datong’s family is an immigrant, and his friend, the judge, the policeman and so on are the natives which can be considered as the main power. They spend many years to overcome cultural difference and integrate into the society. The injustice in the movie is that since Americans did not quite understand the culture in China at that time, they misunderstand such a little thing, Gua Sha. They penalized Datong so hard and even deprived his freedom of staying with family. That remind me the question that Gayatri Spivak “Can the Subaltern Speak?”. Datong, and even the immigrant group, is the subaltern. They cannot tell their idea to the society, and the society did not fully understand them. In addition, that reminds me the Story of My Body which is written by Ortiz Cofer. In the reading, when she came to study in the foreign country, she was discriminated because of her skin, her color, and her identity. I think her experiences is very similar to Datong. Both are minority groups and cannot be fully accepted by the society. Finally, that remind me the idea of “the one” and “The other” in Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. In this movie, Datong and his immigrant family are the Other while the native Americans are the One.

From the movie, it shows the cultural differences and conflict between Chinese family and American society. It also told people the danger of a single story. Communication always a good method to solve problems and conflicts.

Week 10 Context Research Presentation

This week, we will read the book Interpreter of Maladies which is written by the American author of Indian origin Jhumpa Lahiri. The book talks about sensitive dilemmas of the lives of Indian immigrants. Therefore, I want to introduce the author Jhumpa Lahiri so that I can provide some background information for this week’s reading.

Jhumpa Lahiri was born in London. She is the daughter of Indian immigrants from the Indian state of West Bengali. She followed her family and moved to United States when she was three-year-old. During the time that Lahiri began kindergarten, the teacher decided to call her by her pet name, “Jhumpa”, because it is hard to pronounce her original name. After she finished her academic study work in Boston University, she started her literary career. When she was working on Interpreter of Maladies at first, she was rejected from publishers for years. The book Interpreter of Maladies was finally published in 1999. In the story, she addressed Lahiri’s writing style is characterized by her plain language. The characters that she describes is often Indian immigrants to America who will face the difference between the cultural values of their homeland and their adopted home. In addition, Lahiri’s fiction is autobiographical. She always uses her own experience, such as her friends, her parents, and others in the Bengali, to express her feelings and ideas. In addition, Lehiri also write the lives of Indian Americans in her second collection of stories, Unaccustomed Earth. However, the things that she focused on that book changes to the first-generation of Indian immigrants and the struggling experience to raise a family in United States.

The book Interpreter of Maladies is similar to The Leavers by Lisa Ko. Both books talk about the story of foreign immigrants live and experience in United States. All of them are facing the culture conflicts and differences and having struggling period to communicate with others.

Diary of Systemic Injustice Showcase

By Zhenyang Shao

After the Covid-19 outbreak in United States, I notice that many restaurants are closed, and it is very obvious that you can see the aboard hanging on the door which is written that the restaurant is closed and it will open in the future or call for a takeout. However, the board in some restaurants are written that do not allow Asian people to enter inside. In addition, I find that the phenomenon of bullying and beating Asian people is increasing due to the outbreak of coronavirus. I am very confused that why does the spread of pandemic matter the racism?

After I read several news about the pandemic outbreak in United States, I realized the fact of that. First of all, President Trump consider the pandemic is a “Chinese virus” since the pandemic outbreak in China in the first time. He relates the virus to the race pf people. In addition, he even speaks those words and spread them in public. Secondly, the racist catches this opportunity to blame for Asian people because of the increasing number of cases. In addition, I also heard about that the person who wear mask will be regarded as disrespectful and impolite. From what I have learned in the course, Simone de Beauvoir’s mentioned the idea of the one and the other in “The Second Sex”. In this case, the one refers to the people who discriminate the Asian people and connect the coronavirus to the racism problem. The other refers to the innocent Asian people who is under the pressure of wrong public opinion.

For those phenomena, what I want to say is that the main reason to cause the increase number of cases in United States is the lack of protection consciousness and action. If all of us can wear masks and wash the hand, the cases will not increase so fast. For example, Chinese law has put wearing the mask in constitution law. For those people who do not wear mask in public, they will be punished very seriously. This law not only eliminate the injustice and the conflict of wearing the mask in society but also raise citizen’s consciousness of the prevention. In the face of the pandemic, everyone cannot laugh at each other and blame to others. We need to fight together so that we can conquer the virus.
