Review of some of the concepts in the film ‘Blood diamonds.’

In our class this semester, we have learned about how power, identity, and injustices have been identified in the world we are in, but another thing I found interesting was to take a look at the ethical choices we make in our lives. Looking at one man obsessed with finding a valuable diamond no matter what comes (Danny Archer) and the other man (Solomon) risking his life to find his son is the beating heart of the movie.

The scene from this movie that I found touching was ‘the fisherman Solomon Vandy dreams about the day that his young son Dia Vandy will become a doctor. His dreams are shattered when the rebels invade his village and kidnap the young boy to work in the diamond mines where they are brainwashed to become merciless killers held in check by drugs, liquor, and doing a lot of things that disrupt the justice of society.

Solomon was a fisherman in the quiet village of Sierra Leone had a family of a wife and two children who escaped death, but the boy Dia was taken away to be trained as a child soldier with the rebels. And another person in concern is Danny Archer, a Rhodesian smuggler, an ex-mercenary who learned about the diamond when in prison, he could not stop at anything until he gets the diamond.

Solomon’s stand moved me as he couldn’t do anything until he finds his son and reunites with his family.

Solomon sees his son Dia on one of the trucks of the rebels who are using power over the others to rule, these sierra Leone’s government troops could roll into town and slaughter men, women, and children as if they were exterminating rodents, but amidst all what was going on Solomon risk his life to save his son. Danny Archer reaches a moment in time that he fights Solomon because he only cared about the diamond stone Solomon had hidden in the ground, to be specific he only cared about monetary possessions which in the end doesn’t even matter compared to the unending love you can get from family.

The picture show when Danny Archer finally gets the diamond stone that he was yarning for but loses his life in return, so it all did not make any sense but rather so painful at the end of Danny.

The determination Solomon had to search for love not to be consumed by material possessions finally yields his best results as he finally gets his boy back and he reunites with his family. On the other hand, Danny dies after getting the stone and does not even get a chance to enjoy what he fought for. In conclusion therefore we should almost try to focus on things that matter most in life” Love”.

The Cultural conflicts and desires exposed in the black panther movie.

Black Panther is one of the kinds, that was widely remarkable for its diversity in cultures as we see different characters playing from different cultures and exercising different cultural norms. The movie starts with a man telling a story to a little kid, thousands of years ago, five African tribes had constant wars over metal Vibranium, one worrier ingests a ‘heart-shaped herb’ that was affected by the metal and gains superhuman abilities, therefore becoming the first black panther.

He unites all the Jabari tribes to form the nation of Wakanda. For over centuries the Wakandans use the Vibranuim to develop advanced technology and isolate themselves from the world, the Wakandan lived happily exercising their cultural norms as deemed necessary.

With T’Challa the king of Wakanda, they realize that Klaue and his accomplice Erik Stevens steal a Wakandan artifact from the London museum, T’Challa’s friend and Okoye’s lover W’Kabi argues with him to bring Klaue back alive. On the other hand, Klaue is seen to have internalized many of the racist attitudes in different times, a notion supported by some of his words and actions in the film (calling Wakandan “savages”), this might have been misunderstandings or conflicts in the different cultures.

Killmonger an outsider who grew up with different cultural experiences comes into the kingdom and challenges T’Challa for the throne, and the king accepts the challenge which showed how the Wakanda kingdom was running on a monarchy. T’Challa was challenged to a defeat and forced to meet his ancestors at his point of death, He meets the father and in his own words, he says “our people’s blood is spilled on foreign soil. Not only because of the actions of criminals but of the indifference of those pledged to stop them. Victory at the expense of the innocent is no victory at all”. T’Challa’s return from the point of death changes his perspective and rule over the Wakanda kingdom and goes to rechallenge Killmonger, peace comes back to the kingdom, and the cultural beliefs of the kingdom are restored once again.

And at the end of the movie, T’Challa decides to open his nation up to the world after centuries of isolation, it was a logical decision considering the consequences of his father’s decision to leave Killmonger to grow up in Oakland with different cultures that almost tarnished the whole kingdom because of a single mistake.

Diary of systemic injustice showcase

This photo was taken in reference to the fight that happened in the parliament

Distribution inequality of the Government funds and parastatals over the citizens

It so happens that I was privileged to stay in Africa and I got to experience this scenario, the case study was done in the East of Africa, Uganda in particular. The country has for a long time suffered systematic injustices that are non-noticeable by the top officials in the government. They have exercised corruption on the highest level, greedy of power and many other that leave the civilian in pain and sufferings with no help, this actually relates to our theme “can the subaltern speak”, indeed the only way the voices of people is heard is through a few that on the opposite side but still face a lot of opposition in matters concerning the government

In the year 2017, the parliament of Uganda had fights and quarrels that broke out, arising from the speaker of Parliament to pass a decree that the constitution of the country that was kept for many years ago was to be revised, Some of the articles in the constitution to be revised in favor of one person,  the expression of power on ‘oneself’ regardless of what the  “others” felt about it and its consequences to the people of the country

The practice of being a master over the other that has taken long in the African countries has continually impacted injustices not only to the people that live in the country but to the whole world of not observing democracy.

The opposition parties in the government of the country have realized the outcome of the decree of the speaker, fights broke out, riots started and many much more.

This is an inflation of power to govern people which is an injustice to the free will and the rights people have to demonstrate towards democracy.

.

These fights escalated down to the civilians and many people lost their lives, lost their properties, and many others as the police were trying to enforce order in the country. The photo below shows the police using tear gas to calm the situation.

The greed for power that runs in the country, engages a lot of discomforts, resulting in the ideas that most people in the government use of ‘making them poor to rule them easily ‘, this is a systemic injustice because it affects the majority of the population and only caters to the lucky few. These governments move with the idea of popular sovereignty. During the time of declaring independence, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

This resulted in endless fights between opposing parties within the country up to the ‘down person’.

Such injustices should be prevented only by exercising democracy and the people to be given a chance of their rights as citizens of the country.

This shows the sufferings of the civilians in the hands of the military forces
