Diary of Systemic Injustices Showcase-Jeffrey Chen

This is the experience of my friend who is facing systemic injustice in the United States. According to my friend, he may lose his visa due to the new immigration policy implemented by the Trump administration. According to the information he provided, as well as what I have learned from the internet, many Chinese students who are studying in the US face the same situation my friend has. My friend claims that he has received an email from USCIS, saying that they may revoke his student visa. According to what I have known from other Chinese students, some of them have already received a confirmed message saying that their visas have already been revoked. Two groups of Chinese students are greatly impacted. Firstly, the student receives financial support from the Chines government. Secondly, the students who studied in Chinese universities which are on the US government’s “blacklist”. According to the Trump administration, these students are “threatening” the national security of the United States. This is a systemic injustice since the decision made by USCIS is a decision based on their stereotype of Chinese which will have a huge influence on many aspects of society. Besides, it is a decision made by the government of the United States, which suggests it is a decision supported by the biggest institution in the United States.

Since a long time ago, there has been a concept of “the Third World” in Western societies. According to Western people, people from “the Third World” are not as good as them since they are living in underdeveloped regions (Ahmad, p.79). This is also the same reason that Cofer had a horrible experience in the United States, as she was considered a girl from the“third world”.

According to BBC News, more than 1000 Chinese students’ visas were revoked by the US government since they were considered security risks. For the Chinese government, they claimed that it was because of the racial discrimination in the United States, and what the US government had done was irrational.

Not only the United States, countries such as Australia also revoked the visa of some Chinese scholars and students. Nevertheless, many of them received support from their university, and their universities believed they should not be considered as a “threat”.

  1. Revoking the rights of international Chinese students in America has been one of the most disturbing outcomes of the pandemic. Using the virus as a means of revoking visas is just an excuse for blatant racism. International students should be allowed to continue their studies in America, if there are concerns about the virus they should just have to quarantine for two weeks instead of being kicked out.

  2. This is one of the topics that I have seen a lot throughout the pandemic and honestly it is just disrespectful and disturbing. I think it is so unfair that the basic rights of these students are being stripped from them because of what is going on in our society. The corona virus has been used as an excuse to change the lives of these individuals to the point where their education is being taken away from them which is racism at its finest. I believe that there could have should have been any other ways to handle this situation in a way where international students are getting the same treatment and respect as everyone else.

  3. Hi! I really enjoyed reading your showcase and how eye-opening it was. The international students that attend OSU were certainly among people that I immediately thought of when over spring break we learned that OSU would no longer be having in-person classes. My heart broke for them that sometime might cause them to have to leave not under their own will. As time has gone on, and since we have started a new online semester, I was really hoping they could stay. It is really sad to learn that some have already had their visas revoked, and how completely wrong it is to “kick” them out of the US just because institutions can’t hold in person classes. This is against the basic rights that we recognize here in the U.S. and just shows how this instance makes international students feel unequal and less of a person. This is racism that is inevitably in the U.S. because of an administration in office. I also want to point out how saying that they’re a “security threat” is such a lie of an answer. They are just trying to get an equal and quality education like everyone else, why would they be considered a security threat?

  4. I am also a Chinese student, and this policy really caused me a lot of trouble. Faced with the educational opportunities of universities, the revocation of visas has caused a huge crisis in our academic career. And the reason for his policy is also very unacceptable to us Chinese students.

  5. I am an international student from China, and I have heard about many information about that and bring a lot of trouble to many students who want to coninue their academic study in United States. I think that does not make sense that revoking Chinese students’ visa and preventing them to enter university due to some reasons. It is unfair to the Chinese students.

  6. Hi, I really like your showcase and your topic. I am an international student also. In the nearly 8 months, I heard about some unfair policy proposal too many times. The reasons behind the policy are unacceptable and full of inequity. Thank you for bring this topic into discussions!

  7. This is a very blatant example of systemic injustice. This is clearly targeting a minority group of immigrants based on stereotypes of the country. International students come to the country to learn, not to threaten the United States. The “protection” the Trump administration promises with this policy is clearly thinly veiled racism.
