Kick-Off Meeting Minutes

MEETING MINUTES

Meeting Date: 6/6/2018

Members Present: Lois Schroeder-Girbino (ID), Laurie Campitelli (SME, client)

Time: Meeting began at: {3:40 p.m.} and adjourned at:{4:50 p.m.} Place: Facetime (virtual meeting)

Agenda:

1. Review the instructional needs
2. Determine the LMS
3. Discuss scope and what will be expected from SME, from ID, for first deliverable cycle (mitosis unit).
4. Set next meeting.

Brief Summary:

LSG: “This meeting is to identify your instructional needs and define the scope and length of the work.
As stated previously, you believe that students are not engaged in the current instructional unit for mitosis and meiosis and would like a CSCL/blended learning format. I have set up several LMSs for you to preview, to determine which one might fit your needs. Knowing that your current LMS is Classroom, I have included that as an option.”

Client reviews options (i.e. Schoology, Moodle, Edmodo, WordPress, Classroom) as we (Lois S.G. and Laurie C.) discuss the pros and cons of each:
• Schoology—best features only unlocked if school pays fee, which they won’t do
• Moodle—too techy, too big of a learning curve for the time frame and client needs
• Edmodo—strong analytics, with new updates that streamline grading, good instructional community support but harder to enroll students, send join code than Classroom and probably would not be adopted by client’s teaching peers
• Classroom—current LMS, but has been underutilized, client not familiar with more interactive features but would like support for this. Con-not a good landing page for static projects.
• WordPress—very interested in the format for PBL, particularly static assignments, but would like to hybridize with Classroom to have grading automated when necessary and facilitate roster enrollment.

Lois S.G. (consultant) and Laurie C. (client) agree on a hybrid LMS, using both WordPress and Classroom. Client verbally approved a WP domain set-up, “8thscience.tech” with the blended aspects for labs parked there, and Classroom set-up for interactives and online assessments. Also, LSG suggested adding Chrome plug-ins to facilitate interactivity and instructional resourcing via apps such as “Pocket”.

LSG will set up the domain pages and send log-in and PW information to client before next phone conference. Laurie C. suggested two resources, Kessler and Next Gen Science, which LSG looked-up and both discussed. Client screenshot resources from her file and texted to LSG. A collaborative Drive file was set-up and Lois will send link to Laurie, along with MOU, on 6/7/2018.

Discussed the licensing of current materials being limited to one teacher in Classroom, but LSG will be creating original materials to supplement so client can share with team.

Also discussed “sexual reproduction” as a term, what is acceptable. Term is part of the anchor standard in the context of “sexual vs. asexual reproduction”, but client makes sure students understand “This is not a sex ed course.”

Discussed the scope of project, and unit instructional time was revised downward to four weeks total (both units) from six weeks to better fit client’s teaching cycle and testing schedule.

Laurie C. pointed out that her existing Classroom is set-up for six different classes/rosters, which will need to be added to the new Classroom by Laurie C. once her class lists come in (which may occur after final deliverable). Lois S.G. agreed with client to stick with Chrome browser for client, which is relevant for Classroom plug-ins and the Chromebooks her students use. Additionally, client wanted a separate Gmail account set-up for this Classroom, to separate her school emails from the instructional design process, which Lois completed during the conference, and shared the log-in information with Laurie C.

Lois S.G. will text Laurie C. when WP and CL can be previewed, before next phone conference on Monday 6/11/18 at 3 p.m. Lois S.G. will email MOU to be Docusigned on 6/7/18.

Laurie C. recommended released ODE 8th Grade Life Science test, but was not available online. At the end of the meeting, Laurie C. and Lois S.G. jointly previewed the www.nextgenscience.org science standards, and Laurie suggested p.11/32 under the “storyline” navigation bar, “Middle School Life Sciences” as an additional resource. Laurie also suggested that incorporating 5E/SAIL pedagogy when possible, as it is a district norm for science content.

Assignments & Next Steps

Lois Schroeder-Girbino:
• Draft Memorandum of Understanding (will be docu-signed prior to next meeting)
• Set-up separate log-in for WP domain, 8thscience.tech and start creating landing pages for labs.
• Begin mitosis unit design, incorporating both WP and Classroom.

Laurie Campitelli:
• Provide science resources via text or shared Drive to facilitate mitosis unit design process
• Provide 5E/SAIL instructional resources
• Preview site and prepare suggestions and questions for next meeting.

Next meeting scheduled for:
{Mon. June 11, 2018} — {Phone Conference} — {3:00 p.m.}

Objectives of next meeting:
1. Review mitosis unit
2. Determine revisions needed
3. Identify assessment tools for analytics
4. Review project timeline
