Session 3:

Bystander Intervention
Have you ever been in a conversation when someone said something biased that made you uncomfortable, but you weren’t sure how to respond? Most of us struggle to address these all too common situations, whether in the classroom, the lab, the workplace, or even socializing with friends. Even though we want to do what’s right and stand up for equality, we don’t always know how to take action in that awkward moment—especially if we aren’t sure whether the person making the comment actually meant to cause harm.

As members of the university community, we must be empowered to take action in these moments when bias manifests so that we can create a welcoming, inclusive, and affirming environment for our fellow Buckeyes. This session will illustrate the importance of committing to being an active bystander in moments when bias emerges through microaggressions, as well as provide participants with actionable skills to do so. These skills are tailored to create educational conversations in response to biased comments/actions, rather than eliciting a defensive reaction from the person who has (perhaps unintentionally) caused harm. Participants in this session will thus learn how to effectively communicate in challenging situations through the employment of strategies that can be tailored to the particular situation at hand.

If you plan to attend this session, please fill out this form prior to lunch: http://go.osu.edu/activebystander

Roundtable Discussion: Service Opportunities and Community Engagement
Why do we serve?  Who really needs service and what is the best way to reach them?  These questions and more will be discussed in this open roundtable discussion, led by the Advocates for Communities and Education Scholars.  We will discuss effective ways to serve our community including current opportunities in the central Ohio area.  Students will engage with other leaders from various Scholars programs and will leave the discussion with a better idea of how to approach community service and have real-life examples of how we can all make an immediate difference in our community.  This session is great for anyone looking to increase service and volunteer hours, especially those who plan to apply to graduate or professional school, where service hours can really set you apart from other applicants.
