Year in Review

I wouldn’t consider myself to be very globally aware. I’ve never left the country and haven’t done much travel within the US either. I started off the year planning to step out on the global stage with a study abroad trip to Iceland. However, the trip quickly became a financial challenge and I decided I would rather spend a longer time abroad as more of a citizen than a tourist. My current plan is to look for internships or research positions abroad next summer so that I can live and work in a different country and also be paid to help supplement the cost of travel.

I’ve had many opportunities this year to focus on original inquiry. I’ve continued undergraduate research all year and will continue in the lab this summer. I’ve also been able to help others with their original inquiries as a research assistant for the perovskite project. In addition, I’ve had the opportunity to do another small research project in my analytical chemistry class to make paper devices that detect iron in water. They didn’t really work but I learned a lot from the process.

My Honors contract definitely shows my commitment to academic enrichment. I’ve consistently chosen the most difficult classes available in an already difficult major. However, I’ve enjoyed almost every class I’ve taken at OSU so far and definitely prefer the challenge. I’ve chosen GE’s that interest me and that I believe will broaden my world views. I’ve definitely tried not to pick the GE’s that I feel would be too easy because I’m already familiar with the material. For example, my English classes in high school were all very focussed on the classics. This si why I took my second writing class on protest literature, because it gave me a new perspective that I had never seen before.

I think I’ve grown a lot as a leader this year. I really focussed on building relationships with other people in my major. I frequently organized and took part in study groups with other chemistry students. I also was elected to a leadership position in the Chemistry and Biochemistry club.

I’ve finally found a service club that I think will be perfect to meet my needs. I joined Bucket and Dipper, an honorary that does yearlong service projects. I’m determined to commit myself this club since I’ve been pretty bad at keeping up with service in college.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I would like to travel to Spain at some point during my time at Ohio State. I’ve been studying Spanish language and culture since I was eleven and would love to experience it first hand. Ideally, I’d like to spend a month is Spain walking El Camino de Santiago so that I can see a good amount of the country and immerse myself in the language.

Original Inquiry: My long term career goal is to become a researcher so I would like to become involved in a lab as soon as possible. I’d like to work on a project that I have genuine interest in and to develop a relationship with my professors. I’d also be open to dedicating my summers to research since it may be difficult to dedicate a large amount of time during the school year considering my class schedule.

Academic Enrichment: It’s important to me that I take challenging classes outside of those directly related to my major. I particularly enjoy English and writing and find these skills to be important in terms of any future career since communication is so essential. I’ve considered teaching, publishing research results, or writing textbooks, and all of these career paths require an ability to effectively communicate information.

Leadership Development: I’d like to pursue leadership not only in the traditional sense, such as positions is clubs and organizations, but also to develop my leaderships skills in everyday life. I think it is important to lead by example for peers and to act as a leader by helping my peers in any way that I can.

Service Engagement: Service has always been important to me and I intend to do as much meaningful service as possible during my time at Ohio State. I particularly enjoy working with children and care deeply about improving education. I hope to find organizations that involve working with children, especially is academic settings.
