Year in Review 2

As my second semester comes to an end, I am bewildered by the fact that I will soon be a junior. Just like my time in this program, my college experience is moving along too quickly. This semester has brought about a lot of changes. I am officially interning abroad with the Fisher College of Business in a program called the Summer Global Internship Program (which is located in Madrid, Spain). This is a dream come true and I cannot wait to take my passion for traveling and learning to another level in less than a month. This program has encouraged and ignited this passion and has prepared me quite well for my journey. I have also decided that I will most likely double major in Marketing and Logistics. This semester has been exciting in the way that I continue to find passion for my future career. With these changes, I am excited to move forward here at Ohio State and beyond.

IA Poster Project

IA Project-2g1wrt5

This project was focused on the preparation for my internship abroad this summer in Madrid, Spain. The largest and most time consuming aspect of this project was my weekly attendance to the Spanish and Portugese Club conversation tables. It was extremely beneficial learning the basic conversation skills that I will need to fully immerse myself in Spain’s culture. It was also beneficial to research Madrid’s history, attractions, and I reached out to other students that have been on the same trip for advice. I also created a budget and investigated costs of weekend trips. The research and participation in the club has helped reduce anxiety about the trip and has helped me prepare to the best of my ability. It has also made me excited for this new experience which I will endure in about a month.

Role of Literacy in Contexts of Family and Environment

literacy-in-context

In this piece I analyzed the role of literacy in contexts of family and environment, and how the lives and literacy experiences of Fredrick Douglass and Precious Jones are shaped from hostile and abusive environments and families.

Through their journeys to read and write, they gain greater self expression, and make progress in personal development. Overall, we seek to expand our definition of literacy perhaps as a process of personal expression, self development, and as an avenue to speak and write out against oppression. Lastly, by looking at literacy in the contexts of environment and role of each character’s family, I gained a better understanding of literacy and how if affects these people’s ability to develop literacy skills.

Vision Statement

The skills and traits required to be a successful scholars student include strong leadership, communication, collaboration but above all passion for learning. One of my strengths is that I have a strong passion for learning which was one of the biggest reasons I became a scholars student. I love being challenged. There is something irresistible about digging into a new subject and unearthing details that I’ve never seen before. I genuinely get a thrill from seeing things in a new light. This has inspired me to take a wide range of academic courses that diversify my educational experience and has encouraged me to study abroad this summer in Madrid, Spain. Being an International Affairs scholars has been a great way to mix my interests of traveling while focusing on my future career in marketing. From my own experiences, to be successful in this program one needs to be engaged and passionate about new experiences and challenges.

Challenges individuals face who want to be leaders in our society include inspiring or motivating others to be passionate about their jobs, managing relationships and a positive image, and differentiation from competition. I have come to the realization that as college students we are all competing for jobs and internships and it is extremely important to be passionate about our work and that we all need to differentiate from or competition. However, these challenges intertwine. If we find passion in a career of field this could lead to a unique work experience and environment where we don’t just find personal success, but also success for the company/organization/work we do.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology in Education

technology-in-education

In my second year writing course English 2367.01 Honors, we focused on language, identity, and culture in the U.S. experience. In a group presentation with my fellow honors students, we looked at the disadvantages and advantages of technology in education focusing specifically on kinder garden through eighth grade studies. I also began to appreciate my own experiences with technology in my education, but quickly realized the dangers of young children using too much technology. Disadvantages included possible eye fatigue, possible increase in ADD/ADHD, etc. However, technology has a unique purpose for those with disabilities and different learning styles that are more interactive. Also, we saw that the technology might not be the big problem, but instead the implementation of technology through teacher training and computer access/infrastructure. his project made me realize the lack of evidence that we have to prove the benefits of technology. Because technology is relatively new to education, maybe positive research will take morWith a society that is continually moving toward in a technological age, some argue that those who don’t have adequate access to technology could fall behind in education and the work force. I have learned to appreciate my own experiences with technology in education and believe that we need to focus on closing the technology access gap in education here in the United States.

Trash Talk: Solid Waste Management in India

Final2

My first semester I took a class called Environmental Science 2100 and our biggest project was a similar to a research project on a specific issue effecting the environment. I chose the lack of solid waste management in India and its effect on groundwater pollution (specifically three landfill sites, Vendipalayam, Semur, Vairapalayum). Because India is one of the fastest growing countries in the world based on population, economic growth, urbanization, and industrialization today, I think it is very important for a developing country to have strong solid waste management. I focused on one of the biggest problems of the lack of solid of waste management, groundwater pollution. Water, being the basis for life and development, is already scarce in our world. Landfills that are non-engineered and unlined can cause it Leachate (caused from rainfall that collects organic and inorganic compounds) to secrete through the soil and contaminate groundwater, becoming unsafe for those close to landfills. In this project, I researched a specific study and analyzed how Leachate effected the groundwater in the three landfill sites, coming to the conclusion that Leachate is dangerous for a developing country like India, and India needs to increase investment and focus on this issue by providing uniform collection and transportation methods, cleaner and more advanced processing methods, and lastly the most important being the disposal (lined landfills, proper methane disposal, etc.). I really enjoyed this project because it challenged me to think outside the box and enabled me to solve a real world problem.

Democratic Transitions: Russia vs. South Africa

Artifact

In one of my favorite classes of my freshman year, Political Science 1200 (Comparative Politics), we delved deep into how democratic political institutions are created and how states can provide economic growth and economic development for their citizens. What I really enjoyed about this paper and about the class is that there is not a simple or easy way to pursue both simultaneously. Most of the transitions to a democratic political institution did not come easy and many trade-offs were made. In this specific paper, we analyzed why South Africa has been more successful than Russia in consolidating democratic politics. I enjoyed comparing the two political systems and in the end I have developed my own opinions about what I believe creates a successful democratic political system. I also really liked this class because it opened my eyes to all the different democratic political institutions around the world. While democracy may seem the same and have the same fundamental principles, there are many ways of executed those principles (many of which I was unaware of).

Circle of Sisterhood

Circle of Sisterhood Presentation

I have recently joined Kappa Alpha Theta – Alpha Gamma Chapter here at Ohio State and have joined the Circle of Sisterhood committee, specifically the design team. In this presentation, it states our mission as sorority women and how we are driven to help provide education to women internationally. As stated in other projects, like the Millennium Goals,  I believe education can be an open door for social mobility, security, personal development, and progress for a healthier society. I have always felt very strongly about education especially for women because of the challenges many women and young girls face when gaining access to education. It is wonderful to be surrounded by women that have this same passion. Also, it is so amazing to be surrounded by strong women in Greek life outside of my chapter. As a member of the design team, I will assist in creating T-shirt designs, banners, and other merchandise items to help spread awareness of the Circle of Sisterhood and our mission.
