Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

I’ll say it is fairly convenient that the honors program here at Ohio State is so heavily intertwined with an ideology such as this one, as to help guide our behaviors and plan out our future more effectively. Starting with global awareness, I figure at this point that my approach to this will mostly revolve around coursework. I have not put much though to study abroad, or any sort of significant travel. I don’t have any plans to pursue anything like that at the moment, though that may change.

Original inquiry is something that I plan to get fairly involved in during my time here, particularly via research. Recently I attended the chemistry/biochemistry major information session, and research was something that was heavily stressed there. Not only was its importance discussed, but they also gave some resources on how to get involved with research, including a class on getting started with biochemistry research, which I plan to take in two semesters. It’s very clear that research has to be a critical part of my college experience, particularly from the standpoint of building up a resume.

Academic enrichment should be a rather straight-line concept for me. Being as I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry, since I am pre-medicine, There are general degree requirements that I’ll follow, and otherwise I’ll meet the general education requirements for the honors college of arts and sciences. This being said, I am not going to take every honors class available to me. I will take honors classes, but I’ll be selective about it. As academically enriching honors coursework is, being a pre-med student means that I need good grades. I have to be smart about my academic schedule so that I can realize this.

The easiest way that I can see to approaching leadership development is simply getting involved in the university’s student organizations, and committing myself to the point that I can attain some leadership positions in those groups.

Service engagement is something that can mesh with several of these other ideas. For instance, global engagement can involve travel opportunities that will often involve service. Right now though, my access to service is probably going to revolve around my involvement. Particularly, I am currently involved with Arts and Sciences Student Council. This organization will provide me with plenty of service opportunities for as long as I am involved. The fact is that I have the resources to get a handle on all of the honors G.O.A.L.S., the only remaining variable is how I choose to act upon them.

Career

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. About Me

I have three main interests: the first is music. Music has always been a major part of my life, most notably with my experience in my high school marching band and concert group. I love music, and playing the trumpet, and I hope those stay with me as I go through my college experience. The second is medicine. It’s in my family; my father is a gastroenterologist, and my mother was a registered nurse. I have developed a strong sense fo respect for the medical field, to the point that I will be completing college on the pre-med track. My final interest is baseball. I am a baseball fanatic. I played club baseball up through my sophomore year of high school, I am currently a high school certified umpire for the state of Ohio, and I am a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. Those are really all the important details about me.
