GOALS – Columbus To Do List

On Sunday 10/20, Alex, Olivia, and I ventured into downtown Columbus. Beforehand, we had plans to get coffee in the Short North. We planned this without realizing that the Columbus Marathon was happening. The COTA bus took an alternate route and threw our plans out while doing so. Halfway through the walk to what we thought was the northern part of the Short North, we ended up at the North Market which was farther South than we originally planned to be. We ended up getting brunch at the North Market which was extremely enjoyable. My favorite part was exploring the stands in the North Market in search for the perfect meal whereas my least favorite part was all the walking and getting lost that was done during this trip. I would 100% recommend the North Market to anyone visiting Columbus and would highly recommend the place that we got breakfast (if I only knew the name). From this experience, I learned to always double check navigation and to plan around major events that change traffic patterns.

VAR Strengths Test

According to VAR strengths test, my strengths are humor, curiosity, kindness, and gratitude. I feel like these strengths are an accurate representation of who I am as a person. Being able to see the lighter side of things and bring humor to any situation is a trait that I pride myself on the most. Curiosity and gratitude make sense with the academic path that I am currently following and represent my interests pretty well.
One of the most surprising traits that was not listed as high on the strengths list as I thought would have been was perseverance . Throughout my time in high school, one of the most common traits used to describe me was related to perseverance. Maybe this strength had lessened over time or maybe it isn’t as high because of the phrasing of some of the questions on the quiz.

Also with the quiz, the bottom strengths were prudence, love, and self regulation. I feel like this is an accurate description and was relatively expected as an outcome. Overall, I think these strengths can be worked on through effort and self reflection.

About Me

Hey! My name is Olivia Schlichting and I’m from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have three siblings and three dogs.  I’m a first year and hoping to study biomedical engineering. I plan to get everything out of OSU that I can including study abroad, internships, and attending lots and lots of football games. I hope to one day work in the bio tissue engineering field and help further the treatment of various fatal diseases. Outside of school, I love to run and hope to run the 2020 Chicago Marathon. I also like to hang out with friends, travel, and stay active. Over the summer I coached a summer league swim team that won the championship and taught private swim lessons. I plan to get involved in various organizations on campus including SWE, BuckeyeThon, BMES, and most likely a sorority here on campus. I’m super excited for this year and look forward to getting to know new people and OSU.

Artifacts

For my artifact, I chose to take a picture of my running gear. The shoes are my running shoes that have seen a lot of miles recently. They are pictured along with the two other important items for running: music and water.

I chose these artifacts to represent a small part of my life. Since the winter of last year, I’ve picked up a new hobby: running. Running has provided me with many opportunities to escape from the stresses of everyday life and meet new people. These running shoes also represent future goals. Early next year, I hope to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon and eventually in late fall next year, the Chicago Marathon. Running also represents a connection to my family. Both my parents have completed multiple marathons and my siblings plan to join me for both the Pittsburgh race and Chicago.

Year in Review

Overall, I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person over the past year. Before I came to Ohio State, I was a person more focused on what other people thought about me and more trivial things about life. Throughout the year, I’ve become more independent and more myself. I’ve grown some of my interests into passions and learned how to be a better student. I’ve found a passion for humanitarian work by meeting extremely inspiring people and going in the Guatemala service-learning trip. I learned the ways I study best and am still working on the ability to ask for help. I feel extremely fortunate to have had opportunity to grow as a person and as a student and am extremely excited to see what next year has in store.
