Global Awareness:
My first instance of Global Awareness this year at The Ohio State University is my enrollment in the London Honors course. This study abroad class requires that for the fall semester a one credit hour class is taken and then in December over Winter Break my classmates and I will travel to London for two weeks. The goal of this class is to gt students excited about traveling and studying abroad, while also creating a unique community of honors students that get a cultural immersion experience within their first few months at the university. This course is incredibly interesting and engaging, we lecture on the culture, history, and contemporary setting of London and then when we travel to London we will visit many of the historical locations and landmarks that we discussed in class, so that as students we experience our coursework in real life.
Original Inquiry:
My goal for original inquiry as a student at Ohio State is to get involved in research within the university. I know that as a freshman my interests and career goals are subject to shift which is why I am waiting to involve myself with research until I next year when my interests are more concrete and I can invest myself in a research lab under a topic I am truly interested in. However as a freshman, I have already begun the process of looking into research by subscribing to the pre-health email list so that I am updated on possible research opportunities and labs. Also, when I am back in Colorado for the summer I will be shadowing at the Anschutz Medical Campus for CU Boulder so that I can get clinical and in-person experiences within the medical profession.
Academic Enrichment:
When applying to The Ohio State University, the deciding factor was the extensive resources and benefits of the honors program. As an honors student, I hope to take advantage of the honors program by taking multiple honors courses and upper divisional courses, so that I get the most out of my higher education experience. Outside of the classroom, I am currently getting involved in medical clubs and subscriptions, such as Volunteers Around the World and the Pre-Health email list. For spring semester, I am going to further my academic enrichment by rushing for Phi Delta Epsilon, which is a pre-medical oriented fraternity that serves to help students find an undergraduate community of like-minded students and have access to the resources necessary to become a successful pre-medical undergraduate student and become a strong medical school applicant.
Leadership Development:
For leadership development I am cultivating my skills by getting an on-campus job at the Recreational Center. Working at the recreational center I am enhancing my interpersonal skills and growing my leadership skills by taking on new responsibility roles and team positions. Within the job through Recreational Sports, there are opportunities to showcase dedication to the work environment and become promoted to higher leadership roles, which I hope to achieve as I continue to work for the University and gain workplace experience. As leadership pertains to my major, I will work within the extracurricular clubs that I am currently in to become an active member and eventually run for a leadership role later in my collegiate career.
Service Engagement:
To serve the global community I am currently involved in Volunteers Around the World, which is a medical service organization that takes annual service trips to struggling communities across the globe and volunteers in clinics providing people with basic clinical medical skills. While I am not traveling in a service trip this summer, I am going to travel and participate in a service trip in the summer of 2019. To serve the Ohio State University community I registered as a member of Buckeye-thon and plan to fundraise money for the fight against pediatric cancer.
