Capstone Project: Helping People Communicate

Attached to this post, is my capstone project for Health Science Scholars. I titled my project, Helping People Communicate, because for my forty hours of service I volunteered with a wide range of people who suffer from various communication disorders. This project provided me with the opportunity to have exposure to the demographic I want to work with in the future as a speech language pathologist.

Service

The service that I participated in the past year, have been small one-time service projects that have been offered by different clubs and benefited a multitude of different organizations. In the fall semester I volunteered on the community service Pay it Forward day with HSS. During this day, we went to GEM middle school and helped the teachers weed out the school garden, where the students go to learn about different pants and how to work in a garden. I also tied blankets for the James Cancer Center, who gives each patient receiving chemo a tied fleece blanket. During the spring semester, a lot of the service I did was through the Greek Organization, Gamma Phi Beta, I am a part of. One project I participated in was a card making event for Meals on Wheels, where we made spring and Easter cards that are put in with the meals delivered to seniors in the community. I also volunteered at Moonball, Gamma Phi’s annual fundraiser to raise money for our philanthropy, Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is an organization that helps middle school girls build confidence while training to run a 5K. I also volunteered at Columbus Starhouse, a drop-in center for Columbus young adults from age 18 to 24, where I helped organize their warehouse. This summer I am also excited to be participating in service, I will be volunteering once a week at The Christ Hospital, in their speech therapy department and with Chargers, an organization that runs baseball teams for disabled youth.
