G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: There are many ways in which I plan to learn about global awareness. I’m in the Morrill Scholars Program and they have a lot of discussions and dialogue regarding diversity. Each month, we have a meeting about social justice and activism in which we talk about marginalized and underrepresented groups of people and think of strategies to combat this. I also live in the Morrill Scholars Learning Community where I interact with peers of different racial, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds. The amount of identities in my residence hall is eye opening and allows me to become more aware of different people and lifestyles. The coursework I plan to take while at OSU also allows me to learn about different people and the world. My Philosophy 1300H will allow me to learn about ethics, my Geography 2750H class will allow me to learn about places in the world, and my Anthropology 2201H class has allowed me to learn about ancient civilizations. I also want to visit the Czech Republic while in college to see the architecture and learn about the country’s political history.

Original Inquiry: Right now, I am working in the Clark Larsen’s Bioarchaeology Lab cataloging research as a Work-Study job. I plan on reaching out to a professor named John Hunter next semester to start doing research with him. He studies mammalian evolution and I think my background will allow me to jump onto his team and start working on research. He has an appointment in the School of Earth Sciences and EEOB so I plan on working with him for my Honors Thesis.

Academic Enrichment: I truly want to become proficient in a language. I also want to continue learning how to identify things, so classes that teach me how to do that I find extremely satisfying. For example, in my Earth Sciences class, I’ve learned how to recognize geologic features. I’m also interested in learning how to identify plants in addition to animals and rocks. I’m excited to take Art History classes because it’s a subject that I know about but I feel as if I don’t know enough, so I’m excited to learn. I’m also excited to take my Geography class because I want to know a variety of countries and specific attributes of the countries. This will also make me more globally aware. I’m taking classes that I’m interested in which makes my degree in college more valuable to me.

Leadership Development: I’ve joined the Honors and Scholars Programming Board and plan to be on the board for four years. I also plan on joining the club Active Minds. Being in clubs that feel meaningful will allow leadership skills to develop and during my junior or senior year I may attain a leadership position.

Service Engagement: Active Minds is a mental health group that raises awareness about issues regarding mental health. HSPB also plans a lot of events that involve volunteering. During later years, I may look at clubs that focus specifically on volunteering.
