Periodontal/Alzheimers

Periodontal disease (PD) is a disease in which chronic inflammation leads to bone and tooth loss in 20-50% of the global population. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in aging adults. Several studies have found a positive correlation between AD and PD, but the mechanisms underlying their relationship remain unclear. We are currently working in collaboration with Dr. Ruth Barrientos from the Department of Psychiatry to investigate the mechanisms linking these two debilitating diseases.
