Year in Review

I have started my second year at The Ohio State University and I am very proud of the work I have accomplished thus far. Although I had a rocky start to my college career, my GPA has risen an entire point from my first semester. I am proud to put my GPA on my resume at a 3.115 to show that my hard work and determination has paid off. I plan to start taking classes within the Chemical Engineering major this spring 2017 semester! I am excited to dive in to the core classes and continue to work toward my goal. One of the most important lessons I have learned this past year is the value of friendships and strong connections. Finding good study partners and maintaining happy relationships has provided me with a solid framework for success. I am very proud of how far I have come since my first semester, and I hope to continue to grow and improve.

In addition to my recent success in academics, I have an opportunity to intern in a sleep disordered breathing research lab at Harvard Medical School this summer! I am excited to spend my summer in Boston learning how a research lab is run and gain some professional experience. I will be studying sleep apnea under D. Andrew Wellman, MD, PhD. I am busy preparing for this amazing opportunity and am happy to see my hard work paying off.

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

Buck-I-SERV Trip Leader – March 2017

I led a team of students on a service trip to the Greater New York City Area over my 2017 spring break. We stayed at the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, New Jersey and partnered with Break-A-Difference to do various service work throughout the week. We worked in a food pantry, served food at a soup kitchen, and even set up a college fair for the local kids at the Boys and Girls Club. Leading a team of students for a whole week required some serious preparation and handwork, but in the end it was all worth it.

Summer 2017 Internship: Undergraduate Research Assistant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts

I will be working in a sleep apnea research lab this summer in as an undergraduate assistant. I am excited to learn new skills and gain valuable experience.

Artifacts

A project for a Green Engineering Scholars Class at OSU.

This project researched the growing problem of water shortage in California. The group discovered that water is being outsourced in many ways which leads to an over accounting of the available resources.  There are many conflicts of values when discussing clean water as a human right, yet there is a limited amount of the resource.  This is a growing issue in not only California, but the world as well. I have learned not only to appreciate the resources we have here in America, but that green engineering to conserve fresh water will most likely become more important in the future. The link for this project powerpoint can be found here:  Minimize water usage in Southern California  In addition to learning about this growing issue, I had the opportunity to work with two very talented individuals on this project. I enjoyed the time we spent working on the project, and I learned a lot about team work and the importance of communication within a team. We had many ideas for the direction this project could take and we all had to compromise and work through a solution.

About Me

I am a second year chemical engineering student at The Ohio State University.  I have a strong back ground in math and science and am eager to learn new things. I hope to graduate in four years with my Bachelor’s degree. At Ohio State I am a part of the Green Engineering Scholars program on campus as well as participating in intramural sports, specifically soccer. My family currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, but I am originally from Greenville, South Carolina. I was lucky to go to a small high school, Little Miami, where I developed several strong friendships. My senior year of high school was a little untraditional as I participated in PSEO (Post secondary education opportunity). This program allowed me take some of my senior classes at a local college, University of Cincinnati Blue Ash. One of the classes I took while I was there was biochemistry. I greatly enjoyed the class and the professor, and I finished the course with one of the highest grades in the entire class! That biochemistry class and the professor (I think his name was Dr. Stringfield), was one of the major factors that led to my decision to become a chemical engineer.

I got accepted into the chemical engineering program here at Ohio State and am about to finish my sophomore year. I also have an internship set up for this summer that I am very excited for. I will be working as an undergraduate research assistant in a sleep apnea research lab at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As nervous as I am, this is an incredible opportunity to gain experience outside the classroom. Overall, OSU has provided me some amazing opportunities and I am blessed to be a part of the campus life here in Columbus. Go Bucks!
