Our research is focused in the fields of immunology and parasitology, with a particular interest in understanding the immune responses involved in mediating protection or immunopathology during parasitic diseases. Most of our laboratory’s research focuses on the zoonotic disease leishmaniasis and discovering novel therapies and vaccine for this infection. Studies conducted in my laboratory over the last 15 years have provided critical insights into mechanisms of immunity and susceptibility to leishmaniasis and have led to the discovery of potential novel bifunctional drugs for this disease. Translational studies in collaboration with our international partners are focused on developing novel field-deployable treatments for leishmaniasis. More recently, our research interests have also broadened to the field of cancer, with a focus on the role of inflammation in tumorogenesis.
