Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

During my college career I would like to participate in at least one study abroad trip. Currently I am interested in a trip to Greece, during which I would study ancient engineering and architecture while exploring cities and ruins. This trip appeals to me because it not only discusses engineering, my major, but also discusses history, another interest of mine.

I am a member of the Morrill Scholarship Program as part of the Holistic Well-Being team. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Ohio State runs this program and has a mission to increase and help diversity thrive on campus. The Holistic Well-Being group once a moth and we participate in activities focused around the 9 areas of wellness and how they can be affected by social injustice. I plan to continue participating in this program throughout my college career because of its positive influence on my life and others’.

My favorite part of the Ohio State Scholar’s Program so far is the service opportunity. With busy college schedules, it is hard to take time out to give back to the community. However service opportunities are often available through my Green Engineering Scholars. For example, on September 29th, I was able to help weed and clear the garden behind Jenning’s Hall. In the near future I plan to participate in one of several tree plantings going happening around the city of Columbus. My goal is to continue making an effort to serve and give back to the community around me, especially in the area of environmental improvement.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

My first lab for Fundamentals of  Engineering class at Ohio State University was the Toy Adaptation and Electricity lab. During this lab we were able to explore fundamental concepts of electricity such as voltage, resistance, and amperage using breadboards. We then took apart a children’s toy and found the wires that caused the toy to light up and play a song when the button was pressed. A wire with a female jack was then soldered into the circuit so that adapted buttons could be connected to the jack and could cause the same reaction as original button. This allowed the toy to be adapted so that children with disabilities are able to play with it. I thought this lab not only taught me about electricity, but allowed me to practice soldering and allowed engineering students to do something good in the community. I enjoyed the Toy Adaptation Lab the most because of its community service component.

About Me

Hello! My name is Troye Sas-Wright and I am a first year engineering student at The Ohio State University. I am from Elyria, Ohio and attended Elyria Catholic High School. I am a huge fan of Cleveland sports, especially the Cavs and the Browns,(yes, really the Browns). Along with enjoying sports, I also enjoy hiking, music, and just being as active as I can be. Before moving in at Ohio State, I had the amazing opportunity to go on the Appalachian Trail with a group of other incoming freshman. This opportunity gave me the chance to make friends before moving in, and learn about life on the trail from hands-on experience, and disconnect from stress and electronics for a week.

My major right now is Engineering undecided, but I am pursuing an Industrial and Systems Engineering major with a possible Environmental Engineering minor.  I decided on engineering because I really enjoy physics and applying math to real-world scenarios. I am very excited to pick up new skills learning programs like Java and Solidworks, while sharpening my skills with Excel and MATLAB. One of my goals is to participate in a co-op program and gain on the job experience and further define what career path I want to take.
