New York City- In my first Autumn semester at Ohio State I had the privilege to attend the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars trip to New York City. This trip was a busy weekend spent in the city that never sleeps; we went on a tour, explored the city, and spent our time volunteering. We were instructed to evaluate the different buildings, machines, and processes that occurred in the city from an engineers point of view. I am a visual learner, so the time spent just observing the different functions of the city allowed me to increase my engineering creativity. We had the opportunity to visit the top of the Empire State Building (view pictured below) and while I was taking in the views I was also pondering how the building was made and the safety procedures the engineers had to take into consideration. Through this trip my love for New York City and desire to design greatly increased.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Volunteering- Throughout my life I have always dedicated my time by serving others. The highlight of my high school career was being a part of SITES which stands for social involvement through education and service. In this program I donated my time at school to various organizations with my peers. I personally volunteered at a local animal clinic and a primary school in my city along with the numerous volunteering functions the class performed together. I have transferred this love of service to college by involving myself with HES- humanitarian engineering scholars. By joining this group I have been able to surround myself with my students who have the same desire to help others. This group has allowed me to expand my service by involving engineering.

About Me

Hello, I am Lauren and I’m a first-year here at The Ohio State University. My lifelong love for mathematics and sciences has paved my decision to major in biomedical engineering. I am a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars group and am looking forward to the many service trips and learning possibilities the group entails. During my time at Ohio State I hope to become involved with various intramural sports and service clubs. When not studying you can find me swimming, playing Frisbee, or watching The Office.  Throughout my college experience I hope to study abroad or attend a service trip to become more globally aware while using my skills to better an undeveloped community. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree I hope to find a job working with prosthetics or continuing my education by pursuing a master’s degree. Sara_Lauren
