About Me

Hello! My name is Gina Santangelo and I am a first year undergraduate student in the Health Sciences Scholars Program. I am currently on the pre-nursing track in hopes of eventually graduating with my BSN.  After I get my degree, I am interested in going to graduate school to peruse being a nurse practitioner or a nurse anesthetist. I attended Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell, Ohio and was very involved there. I played varsity basketball for all four years, was in National Honors Society, and went on mission trips to serve people all over the country. So far, I have been to Pennsylvania, Alabama, Michigan, and Illinois to serve, teach, and care for members of impoverished communities. In high school, I had the opportunity to shadow a nurse anesthetist at an out patient facility in Columbus, Ohio. Through this experience, I gained insight of what a typical day looks like, how to interact with all members of the care team, and what patient interactions would look like from the perspective of a nurse anesthetist. In college, I am hoping to get involved with Buckeyethon, Cru, Project Sunshine (a club to make donations to children and families at Nationwide Children’s Hospital) in addition to being in the HSS program. Also, I am currently in the process of getting a job at one of the University Hospitals. I am looking forward to my journey of getting my undergraduate degree and the people I meet along the way.

Year in Review

Over the course of the last two semesters I grew immensely, both personally and academically. There was adversity that I encountered, but learned to overcome, which helped me progress my character. This year was especially different than any other and instead of allowing it to dictate my first year at OSU, I took matters into my own hands.

During this past academic school year, I participated in Buckeyethon to raise money and awareness for children with cancer, which was a very rewarding experience for me. Additionally, as a pre-nursing major, I applied to the nursing program in December in hopes of getting accepted in June. Even though this is a difficult program to get into, I am confident in my application and look forward to my potential future career path. Furthermore, I participated in the College of Nursing’s C.A.L.M. program where I met with a senior nursing student and discussed a variety of important mental and physical health topics. This connection also helped me create an adequate application for the nursing program. I really enjoyed getting my  Diversity, Intercultural, and Community Engagement (D.I.C.E) certification, which aided me in understanding other cultures and ways to promote inclusion and create socially just leadership in today’s world. Looking back, I think this was a great time to learn more about the current status of the world around me.

Outside of academics and clubs, I also had the opportunity to foster friendships with students in my Health Science Scholars program. It has been very beneficial to have friends who have similar goals and majors as myself. This has helped me manage my time more efficiently, keep my focus, and continue to be active in my community. I am looking forward to my future academic and personal endeavors that are to come at Ohio State.
