“The OSU Council of Graduate Students (CGS) is the official branch of student government that represents every graduate student at the main and satellite campuses. We represent the concerns of graduate students at the university wide and individual level as we aim to understand graduate students needs to push the administration for change where possible and we can help connect you with resources when you are having issues and unsure of where to turn to. Feel free to reach out to Microbiology’s current representative, Ryan Huston (Huston.185) with any such concerns or questions.
Here are a few sample resources/events from various CGS committees:
–RAY TRAVEL AWARD – A service-based award for conference funding; multiple application cycles / year.
–CGS CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANT – A general career development award including for conference registration fees.
–HAYES GRADUATE RESEARCH FORUM – An annual forum open to all OSU grad students and post-docs to apply for poster or oral presentations of their work. Winning presenters in each category receive cash prizes!
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TAX WORKSHOP & WEBINAR – The CGS Committee for International Student Affairs hosted and recorded a free webinar on taxes last year which many students found helpful. The information is from 2022 and some changes may occur from year to year but it may be a helpful foundation for new international students especially.
–GENERAL RESOURCES – CGS also provides additional resources in self-advocacy, medical and mental health, housing, and nutrition/wellness. Click here to see the growing list of resources offered by CGS.
Opportunities to serve your OSU community through/alongside CGS:
- Volunteer to help SAM with their professional development and social events for our department! New officers are needed every year.
- Become an alternate delegate for the Microbiology department for the 2023 – 2024 school year. In the event Ryan is sick or has a conflict, you can represent the Microbiology department for that month’s meeting. Meetings are usually the first Friday of the month from 3:30-5:30 pm. contact Ryan Huston.185 if you are interested in this – it could be a great way to try CGS out if you may want to be a delegate in the future!
- CGS and OSU have a number of committees dedicated to a variety of graduate student issues. You do not have to be a delegate to join a committee if you are interested, but some committees you may have to formally run for such as for the University Senate
