Artifact 2

This artifact is an image of me receiving a certificate designating the completion of University School’s Anderson Scholar Program in Entrepreneurship from an important mentor. This program entailed completing two classes, attending speaker events, winning a business competition, starting our own micro-business, and completing a professional internship. Completing this program sparked a passion in finance and entrepreneurship and ultimately influenced what I am studying in college.

Year in Review

This past semester I have grown as a student and leader. I learned how to achieve my academic and personal goals by focusing and setting my mind to the task ahead. As a leader, I have gained confidence in not only leading others, but also myself.

G.O.A.L.S.

My goals for my second year are to engage in community service, seek leadership opportunities, and prepare for my upcoming summer internship. I am currently a math and English tutor at the Northern Lights Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. This experience fits well under the Service Engagement pillar of Honors & Scholars. I have learned how to effectively communicate and be patient. I look forward to continuing my service at the library.

I am a member of Buckeye Capital Investors and hope to gain a more senior role this year and next. I have benefited from this organization and its leadership and hope to be in a position of leadership to give back to younger members. Lastly, this upcoming summer I will be interning in New York at an investment bank. My goal is to learn much of the technical skills needed to be successful before I start on the job.

Artifacts

My artifact, Skullology, is an artistic rendition of a skull that I designed and constructed out of various metals in my sculpture class. My inspiration for this was my entrepreneurial project, Safe4Play. An application for iPad tablets, Safe4Play uses existing tablet technology like the front-facing camera to assess eye movements, touch to determine reflex response, and others to determine if a young athlete may have sustained a concussion at the point of play. On this creative journey in business, I became fascinated with the brain and skull and questioned why the skull alone could not protect the brain adequately. So that I may understand the architecture of the human skull, I decided to assemble a cranium out of metal nuts and bolts that were welded together. I learned both the biological and cultural significance of the skull. Biologically, the skull protects the brain from minor trauma. Culturally, the skull symbolizes different things to a variety of cultures. For example, in Mexico, the sugar skull is revered in celebration of the dead, guiding their spirits back to Earth. I adapted the design of the skull to subtly incorporate aspects of different cultures, ranging from Mexican to African tribal cultures. Creating Skullology was useful in understanding the intricacies of the skull’s architecture, and its strengths and weaknesses. Constructing this skull was instrumental in writing my business plan for Safe4Play, as it gave me a deeper understanding of concussions and brain physiology, clarifying the business case.
