Fall Semester 2016

This semester has definitely had its challenges, just as I imagine any freshman in college struggles their first year. However each of these struggles have taught me so much. I have learned how to be my own person, living on my own and taking care of myself without my parents to fall back on at the slightest hint of trouble. I have learned how to feed myself, clean after myself and care for myself. I have also learned how to be the type of student who studies, as this was never necessary for me in high school, you could definitely say that college classes hit me hard at first. Overall I feel that I have grown in countless ways here at OSU, in every direction, and I can’t wait to see what else there is in store for me.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

To me, being a global aware individual means a lot of things. It means being knowledgeable about the world all around you, not just where you live. It means having an appreciation for other cultures, religions and languages. And it means stepping outside of your comfort zone to embrace diversity. Being globally aware is important because no matter how hard you may try, you cannot avoid the world. No matter where you live or what your profession is, there will always be people that are different from you that you must be able to interact and get alone with this. Part of this is being knowledgable and understating of another’s culture. In addition, the world is a topic conversation almost everyday: the Olympics, the War in Syria and the list goes on. It is important to be able to engage in global topics. In addition, I personally believe being globally aware enriches you as a person, and find the world fascinating. I will be Globally Aware by studying abroad, taking diverse classes and examining life from a different perspective. And I will combine this Global Awareness with Service by being in clubs such as GlobeMed and and continuing my trips to Honduras over the summer. In addition, in the future I hope to work with Doctors Without Borders.

Original Inquiry

Original inquiry to me means taking the initiative to explore ideas and topics outside of the classroom. This is important because we should be more than just students, but also knowledgable, wholesome individuals. I will pursue Original Inquiry by getting involved in undergraduate research. This will help me become more knowledgeable about the medical field, and also increase my chances of getting into medical school (and a better one). I hope to get involved next semester and continue on throughout my years here. Ideally, I will get involved in a clinical trial because I’ve done research in a lab and while it was fascinating, I think I would enjoy interacting with patients in a clinical trial more.

Academic Enrichment

Academic enrichment, similarly to Original Inquiry means stepping beyond the classroom, but in more of an academic fashion. This can be done by reading a book independently or researching something that was mentioned in class you found interesting. I will pursue Academic Enrichment my challenging myself in my courses. I am also considering switching my major to something such as psychology (to help in treating patients), international affairs (to help in working with DWB) or business (to help in – hopefully – running my own practice after I am finished with DWB). I also intend to take up a minor or two, just to make sure I am well rounded.

Leadership Development

Being a leader means stepping out from the masses, embracing ones individuality and going against the flow. This is often easier said than done as no one wants to be the one who sticks out. But often, this is how change is accomplished, by one person taking initiative and heading in a new direction. I believe being a leader is important because it empowers people and teaches them how to be independent and make decisions on their own, all important skills for being a leader. I intend to be a leader by being the head of clubs in future years, stepping up amongst my peers in the classroom, and getting involved in independent research in the future.

Service Engagement:

I went to a private that required 60 hours of service in order for one to graduate. At first this seemed like a burden. But as I began to get involved in service and see first hand the injustice in our world, I started to develop a passion for changing that. I eventually completed far more than 60 hours of service, doing as much as I could to change my world. And I will continue my service endeavor here at OSU by being in clubs such as GlobeMed, Students for a Sustainable Campus and Ohio Health Aid. I will also continue to work towards helping others here at home by volunteering at the hospital and joining the dog training club.

Heart Walk

In August of 2016, I attended the Central Ohio Heart Walk, an event hosted by the American Heart Association dedicated to raising funds and awareness for various heart diseases. Pictured here is the T-shirt we wore for the walk. It was an incredibly moving event. It was so inspiring the thousands of people gathered; whether because they knew someone with a heart disease, they were inflicted themselves, or they just wanted to make a dirence. There was a strong sense of community the whole time, with children playing, people walking and people laughing (and occasionally crying) together. This event clearly demonstrated how when a community comes together for a good cause, and their hearts beats one,  it is capable of making a change, and a big one. This is especially impactful to me because I have found a passion to committing myself to service and ending injustice in this world one step at a time. And I believe the best way to accomplish this is by coming together.
