Service Project

For my service project, I volunteered at Riverside Methodist Hospital. I worked as a greeter at the front desk. My job consisted of being a bright smiling face to the visitors as well as assisting visitors and patients to various parts of the hospital.

Riverside Methodist Hospital is actually one of Ohio Health’s largest hospitals and it can be quite difficult to navigate. I remember when I first started working there and thinking it was more of a maze than a hospital. Luckily, I had a “Volunteer-in-Training” badge; there are also maps and signs all over the hospital. I got quite a bit of help from the receptionist. I was also lucky that it wasn’t too busy when I first started working there. When I first started volunteering I began working at from 7am to 9am on Wednesdays. However, that quickly became unmanageable due to my non-existent sleep schedule.  To keep my attendance more consistent, I began working in the evening from 5am to 8am on Fridays.

The shift allowed me to a variety of amazing people as the desk has far more volunteers in the evening. I have met students from OSU that I would have never ran into otherwise and also made friends with a few older volunteers. I was surprised to see the range of volunteers that the desk has, but everyone is wonderful. It’s like a small party and we all adore helping the visitors. I’m also glad that I shifted to the evening because there is more variety to who comes to the hospital while in the morning most people are just coming for surgery and need to be taken to the orange area. It’s a bit scary when someone needs to go to the emergency room in the red area, but I can’t stop smiling when I get to take families up to the maternity wing in the yellow.

I have also recently applied to become a desk assistant so it will be interesting to have more work at the desk and actually be able to look up patients on the hospital database.

Medical Interview

A couple of days ago I interviewed Japla Shah over the phone at the 18th Avenue Library. I found her to be an extremely kind person and also was able to obtain quite a bit of interesting information from her. Over the course of thirty minutes, she discussed the difficulties she had in her undergraduate years, changing her major, her volunteer experiences, research, and applying to medical school.

I found that there were many similarities between us. We were both from immigrant families and also the first in our families to attend school in America.

The most interesting portion for me were discussing applying to medical school and research.

Thus far, I have struggled in my classes and it was nice to talk to someone that had the same issues as me. I was able to share my worries about not having a strong enough GPA and what steps I should take to go about improving myself for the application. I discovered that she entered medical school after applying for a second time after she had completed a Master’s program. It was nice to hear from a person that had struggled as I have though their first years of undergraduate and it is reassuring to hear that there was still a way to get accepted into medical school. I had a belief that one was only allowed to apply to medical school once as it was frowned upon by the application committee to apply again. She made it very clear to me that I should get my letters of recommendations very early in advance.

Another issue we shared was having very little research experience and having difficultly finding opportunities. She was able to recommend taking research courses at Ohio State, where professors come to lecture and explain their studies they are conducting in their lab which allow one to apply to the labs at the end of the course. It is also convenient that the courses are only one credit, so it is easy to fit into one’s schedule. It may something I look into.

Do.

Coming to OSU has filled my life with many firsts such as trying bubble tea, going places myself, taking the bus, and getting lost taking said bus but the biggest one is performing and dancing for the first time. Coming to OSU caused me to to step out my comfort zone and become part of a group called J2K, which I will keep with for all my coming years. It’s been the first time I have danced and also performed, but I’m growing to love it.

Go.

First semester, my roommate, Ashley and I finally traveled to the North Market after wanting to for weeks. We were awed at all that was there and all the different varieties of food. We started the visit by walking around once just to get allow at everything. The second time around we drank smoothies and had Indian samosas. We ended out visit with having Pho and buying the most beautiful macaroons. Our adventures didn’t end there. We walked up the street and into this convention center to discover a ballroom dance competition and a Lego convention. We admired all the dresses, but then got lost before finally finding our way back to the street. We continued walking up the road and visiting all the interesting shops along the way. We visited dozens of clothing shops and then stumbled onto Jeni’s. We tried some most delightful ice cream. We had planned to walk all the way back to Park Stradley until the the rain and wind picked. It was wonderful experience, except for the fact that I lost an umbrella to the wind.

Eat.

For the part of the project, my roommate and I decided to try something different that the Asian food that we good for every weekend. We went up the street to get Cajun food. We visited a little place by the name of Da Lavee. It was quite different for my taste buds but I enjoyed the jumbo shrimp with rice. What I did not enjoy was discovering that my roommate took a picture of me eating without my knowledge. I’m just glad I was wearing make up at the time.
