Freshman year at college with many new faces, great experiences and many stressful nights doing homework or studying for tests. A lot happened over the 6 months or so I spent at Ohio State, and I am glad I had the opportunity be a part of it all. From move in day in August, to now, as I sit at home after moving out, I learned a lot, and I cannot wait to start the next year.
One of the most challenging experiences for me this year was with my academics. Not the difficulty of classes or the time commitments to them, but rather trying to figure out what I want to do after graduation. Applying to Ohio State in my senior year of high school, I had no clue what I wanted to major in. Instead of going in undecided, I thought it was a good idea to pick something and get started, knowing that I always had the opportunity to change it, so I chose business, as it seemed like the best idea at the time. However, as I got closer and closer to move in day I realized that it wasn’t what I wanted to do. My entire life I have always been a math and science type student, and I always had a interest in the world of renewable energy, so I decided to change my major. In the world of engineering I felt more at home. I was meeting people with the same interests as me and I was more interested in the classes, but I still wasn’t sure about my decision. In my engineering class, we did a large computer programming unit, using a relatively simple compiler, MATLAB. The more I worked on homework and projects through MATLAB, the more and more I enjoyed doing it. I started learning things we didn’t cover in class and started working with other programming technologies, and finally realized that this is what I want to do, so i switched my major, again. I am so content with where I am right now, and am extremely excited for what the future brings.
Not only did I go through a lot academically, but it was very neat to meet so many people around campus. Coming into Ohio State, I had a bunch of close friends from high school joining me, many of whom I am still good friends with, but more importantly, I got to meet so many new and interesting people. After freshman year was finished, three of my closest friends I had met along the way, with no of them coming from Ohio. Never before in my life had I been given the chance to meet so many people from all over the United States in one place, and I feel like I took control of that opportunity.
Moving out after such a fun and exciting year was bittersweet, and honestly I wish I could have stayed in Columbus. I had made so many new friends and so many memories that I cannot wait until August 19th, sophomore year move in day.
