Final Reflection

Personally, I would say that my skills haven’t really changed but my knowledge has increased a little bit. I had a lot of experience with web-based learning tools from my major which has let me create a pretty big catalog of helpful ones already. I would say that I have learned a few new websites, but overall more of a reinforcement of what websites are more dependable. For instance, the more I have used Khan Academy as an example of a good online tool as well the reinforcement of other students in the discussion boards that they think the same thing has confirmed that Khan Academy is a legitimate and trustworthy website for online learning.

I would say that I learned in more exact terms what kind of learner I am. Knowing what kind of learner I am lets me narrow down what website and online resources I will find more useful to my learning style. For instance I will know that I will probably learn a lot easier from a online tutorial of a subject than say a whole informational page like a wikipedia page. I also think that knowing what kind of learner I am also helps me understand what kind of teacher I am.

I would say that the most meaningful thing about his course to me has been learning what kind of learner I am. I had taken these kind of quizzes and questionnaires before but none in the last 3-4 years. So learning what kind of learner I am at the end of college is probably more meaningful of a result because I think it will stay with me. It can even be applied to my future career because I think that it will translate in possibly how I instruct other people in the workplace or in the way I tackle new projects.

Like stated above I believe that I can translate a lot of what I have learned in my future career in the way that I do my everyday job and the way that I work on projects. I hope to work deeply in the technology industry and a lot of technology can be taught in a step-by-step basis to which I feel having this skill set will benefit. I will also probably working in a team a lot of times and will need to bring new ideas and contributions to projects to meetings consistently. Knowing different resources for things such as graph creation could prove to be very beneficial to me.

Some of the more useful things that I learned, or more discovered, from this class are the different online resources I can use for everyday things like schedules,  word bubbles, diagrams, etc. With these different tools I can greatly increase the clarity and overall validity of my papers and reports.  One thing that I definitely like to approve on is the professionalism of my academic reports and studies because I think that the ones that I do now and the ones that I am sure I will do in the future will be a lot better off.

Module 6 Reflection

This module, like the majority of the ones before, is more of update on my own current knowledge of this subject. As someone who’s major dabbles in Social and Computer engineering I have to write a lot of research studies so finding sources for these is a constant task. I have learned to become fairly swift with my searching and have fairly good confidence in the quality of the sources I usually find. One thing that I have learned and am now using with these searches is by looking to see if the source has been peer reviewed (Slide 4). I never really gave it too much thought when searching but now reading other people’s “reviews” lets me have another metaphorical set of eyes to scan articles.

Most of the ideas brought forth in this module, if anything, reinforce that I am following a correct path when it comes to searching for online articles. There are some tidbits that were new in this module that I know about but don’t often use that I can see myself using but nothing too major. The advice that I would give to other students is to use good judgement when choosing articles. If someone is fishing for articles and is choosing one just because they need to make a minimum then there is a chance that the article is unreliable which could be bad when including it as a source. So no matter what always make sure the article is reliable and applies to the topic

Shell Scripting Educational Video

This tutorial is very informational for budding programmers if they want to learn Shell Scripting with UNIX especially if they are beginners in the field completely. The premise of this video is to introduce programmers who know nothing about what shell scripting actually is and how UNIX is used to create basic command line files. The initial half of the video is showing what kind of shells will be explained in the videos while the latter half shows how to create files.

Personally, I love this video series. This tutorial videos are very clear and are a great help to anyone who wants to begin learning the subject of Shell Scripting. As someone who programs quite often I would say that personal hands on tutorials on the subject that you can pause, rewind, and start over while in tandem programming on your own are the best to learn. It lets you learn and create in real time which is a hard thing to find when learning topics.

Reflection

In this module I think the most useful thing that I have learned is that googling for tools that are associated with the subject that I am learning in class can be really helpful as there are a great number of well developed web apps that have been created.  Almost any subject that I am studying has some kind of useful tool that I can use. I would say this alone is something that I have already put into action. I am taking a handful of other courses right now and I have done searches of tools for each and I have found a few for each that I will be definitely using in the future. This module also has also opened my eyes about different ways other students use tools to study and complete work. I will more likely in the future ask other students what tools they use in order for me to accrue a great library of resources. The advice I would give to students is just to not be afraid of learning from multiple avenues other than just the classroom. There are a number of ways to learn and maybe a way that you will find in a online resource will help you really cement the information in your mind.

My experience with Blog Posts

As I round out my last semester in college I am looking back on all of the times I used ‘blog-esque’ type tools to communicate with my fellow classmates as well as my professors. Some of them have been the creation of blogs like these, some have been basic discussion boards to collaborate ideas with other students, and some have been private blogs for select group members. All of these methods produced similar results in the way that they all let me communicate my ideas or questions dealing with the subject of the class. What I have personally learned from these types of posts is that they work exceptionally well for large groups such as whole classes to collaborate on ideas but for smaller groups such as research groups it is a little harder and slower to do so.

My go-to tech choices for collaborating on ideas with smaller groups is a combination of GroupMe and GoogleDocs. GroupMe is great, fast way for research groups to communicate with each other and post updates on data that they have accrued or new leads. GoogleDocs on the other hand is the tool that these groups can use together to pool their data and work efficiently in a way that lets everyone be able to edit in real time. Both of these utilities used in tandem, can be greatly beneficial in small group discussions.
