Hello! I am Weston Ruffer, a second year Eminence Fellows student at The Ohio State University. I am studying Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering (FABE for short) along with a Humanitarian Engineering Minor. I have a passion for developing sustainable systems in agriculture to provide food for our ever-growing world population. I have always enjoyed helping my family on the farm, and this background has helped to shape my passion to help people with one of their most basic needs. Food.
Along with growing up on the farm, I have traveled to many times to Central America. One of my most memorable trips was to the sugar cane villages in the Dominican Republic. This trip revealed to me how many people are without adequate and nutritious sources of food. It stirred me to devote my life to making food more accessible. In the future I hope to serve others around the world in developing practical and sustainable ways of growing food. In the near future, I hope to study abroad with the university to learn more about the needs of those around the world.
Since my freshmen year, I have been able to work in a lab studying nutrient loads from water flowing to Lake Erie. The project goal is to prevent catastrophic Algae blooms in Lake Erie in the future by managing water runoff from farm land. This experience has been one way that I can serve the community of Ohio and soon I hope to begin a research thesis in this area.
Another opportunity I have had while at tOSU is working as a teaching assistant for the Engineering Department. In this role I continue to learn about engineering as I teach freshmen students just embarking on their college journey.
